TOPIC: ELECTORAL BODIES IN NIGERIA
Meaning of concept

 An electoral body is also known as electoral commission. It is the body


responsible for the organization conduct and supervision of elections in
Nigeria .

 There alhave been several bodies since the inception of the second
republic.
 The FEDECO… ThiS connotes federal electoral commission.( 1979/1983)
 The NEC….this connotes National electoral commission ( 1987)
 The NECON…THIS connotes the National electoral commission of Nigeria (
1993)
 The INEC….this conotes the independent national electoral commission (
1999)
The INEC

This body was created in Nigeria in 1999 to organise elections in Nigeria.


It consists of 12 officials with it’s headquarters in Abuja. The head of the INEC is
the chairman of the commission.
Functions of INEC

 It registers political parties according to laid down rules

 It organises Free and fair election vin the country


 It registers eligible voters
 It grants financial assistance to political parties
 It appoints and trains electoral officers
 It provides necessary materials needed for the consduct of an election etc
Composition of the INEC

 The chairman of the commission which is Prof. Yakub Mahmoud


 The national electoral commissioners
 The resident electoral comiisioners
 The electoral officers
 The returning officers
 The collation officers
 The supervising presiding officers. Etc
