I had an anal fistula in the year 1988. An

anal fistula is a small channel that develops
between the end of the bowel, known as the
anal canal or back passage, and the skin near
the anus. It is most commonly caused by an anal
abscess. It can also be caused by conditions that
affect the intestines (part of digestive system).
Surgery is usually necessary to treat an anal
fistula because very few will heal by themselves.
The procedure used is usually a fistulotomy.
Anal fistula is a disease that has long challenged
surgeonsÊ skills.
I consulted many renowned surgeons
in Dehradun, who treat and consult with
prospective patients prior to surgery. It was
advised that surgery was inescapable to treat it
because it wonÊt heal by itself. The word surgery
itself is scary; but I finally made up my mind to
undergo it, and made an appointment with the
best surgeon of the town for the next day.
My father lived at Manglaur - a small
town located 85 kilometers from the holy city
of Haridwar in the Uttarakhand state of India.
