Fleetguard Recycled
Coolant
Fleetcool™ Recycled EG Premix
Recycled Coolant
“Green” thinking, environmentally conscious customers,
while still desiring value and performance, represent
opportunities for environmentally friendly products.
And, the General Services Administration in the U.S. has
mandated that recycled products like engine coolants be
used whenever possible and are preferred over the use
of coolants blended from virgin glycol stocks.
Together, this represents sales opportunities for Fleetcool
Recycled Coolant.

Recycled Coolant
In this module you will become familiar with:
- The basics of the cooling system and its
challenges
- The Fleetcool Recycled Coolant product line
- The basics of Recycled Coolant maintenance
practices
3
Contents and Objectives:
1. To become familiar with the cooling system and
its challenges
2. To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycled
Coolant
3. To become familiar with the maintenance steps
for Recycled Coolant
4
Objective 1:
To become familiar with the
cooling system and its
challenges.
Objective 1: To become familiar with the cooling system
and its challenges.
Today’s diesel engines are
producing more horsepower than
ever before, and they are doing it
with less engine size and weight.
Lighter engines mean greater
payloads for trucking and other
related industries.
6
Objective 1: To become familiar with the cooling system
and its challenges.
This horsepower relates directly to
heat generation, and the task of
controlling this heat falls to the
cooling system.
7
Objective 1: To become familiar with the cooling system
and its challenges.
The cooling system performs 4
functions. It is designed to:
Absorb,
Circulate,
Dissipate and
Control the heat
8
Objective 1: To become familiar with the cooling system
and its challenges.
All diesel engines with wet liners
are subject to liner pitting. It is
very important for us to
understand what causes this
pitting or cavitation corrosion, as
it is known in the industry.
9
Objective 1: To become familiar with the cooling system
and its challenges.
Liner vibration is the direct cause
of liner pitting, and with proper
maintenance practices and
products, liner pitting can be
controlled.
LINER PITTING or Cavitation Corrosion
caused by imploding vapor bubbles will drill
a hole through the liner wall.
Shock wave impact measured at
15,000 to 20,000 PSI
10
Objective 1: To become familiar with the cooling system
and its challenges.
In addition to liner pitting there are
other concerns or problems that
can occur effecting cooling
system efficiency and engine
performance. Of these,
Corrosion is a major factor.
11
Objective 1: To become familiar with the cooling system
and its challenges.
This corrosion can lead to poor
performance of the cooling
system itself, and costly repairs
or parts replacement.
12
Objective 1: To become familiar with the cooling system
and its challenges.
Another concern is with poor
quality water and scale buildup
caused by excessive levels of
dissolved calcium or magnesium
salts.
13
Objective 1: To become familiar with the cooling system
and its challenges.
Scale can prevent proper heat
dissipation through the liner, and
restrict coolant flow in radiator or
cooler passages.
14
Objective 1: To become familiar with the cooling system
and its challenges.
All of these concerns can, and
must be controlled by a quality
coolant, and specific
maintenance practices.
Poor coolant and poor
maintenance practices
relates to higher operating
15 costs!
Objective 2:
To become familiar with
Fleetguard Recycled
Coolants.
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycled
Coolant.
Recycled Coolant
Recycled coolant provides
customers with a Green
environmentally conscious
alternative to cooling system
maintenance.
17
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycled
Coolant.
Recycled Coolant
The General Services
Administration has mandated
that recycled products like
engine coolants be used
whenever possible and are
preferred over the use of
coolants blended from virgin
glycol stocks.
Recycled Coolants are suitable
for many government contracts
and bids.
18
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycled
Coolant.
Used Coolant can contain the
following contaminants:
Water/glycols
– Soluble salts (corrosives &
residual inhibitors)
– Oils
– Dye
– Metals
– Trace hydrocarbons
19
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycled
Coolant.
Cummins Filtration has partnered with
an independent company that
exclusively produces recycled
coolants and understands the
challenges of removing these
contaminants.
20
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycled
Coolant.
Through a specialized step-by-step,
technologically advance process,
the coolant is cleaned, stripped of
all contaminants and re-inhibited
with chemicals to provide proper
engine protection.
21
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycled
Coolant.
• The used coolant is first pre-treated
to remove these contaminants
• This pre-treatment includes many
steps
22
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycled
Coolant.
Recycled Coolant Process
First, the oil contamination is
removed through a gravity
separation process
There is no trace of remaining oil
contamination
23
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycled
Coolant.
Recycled Coolant Process
After oil separation, a physical-
chemical process uses
precipitation, adsorption, and
media-assisted filtration to
remove metals, soluble oil, trace
hydrocarbons, dyes, and
particles down to1µm.
24
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycled
Coolant.
Recycled Coolant Process
The next and most important
process for recycling the coolant
is High Efficiency Electro
Dialysis (HEED™)
It produces a glycol/water
solution that is nearly the same
as virgin (new) EG and distilled
water
25
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycle
Coolant.
Recycled Coolant Process
This is the base product that is
then re-inhibited with a specific
additive package, depending on
the final coolant product.
26
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycle
Coolant.
Recycled Coolant Process
This multi-stage process ensures a
superior quality product suitable
for many markets and
customers.
Feedstock Pretreated Roughing Polished
27
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycle
Coolant.
Recycled Coolant
Fleetcool Recycled Coolant can
be recycled again and returned
to the original state of new
Fleetcool Recycled Coolant
Many customers have the
concern that if they use a
recycled product, disposal and
pick up could be a problem, but
that is not the case with
Fleetcool Recycled Coolant Note:
Cummins Filtration does not
provide used coolant pickup or
disposal service.
28
Objective 2: To become familiar with Fleetcool Recycle
Coolant.
Recycled Coolant
It is recommended to use
Fleetcool Recycled Coolant in
accordance with the engine
manufacturer’s standard coolant
change guidelines
Typically this is 2 years, 6000
hours or 250,000 miles (400,000
kilometers)
29
