XXXXXXX 1 INTRODUCTION TO INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS

UNIT Unit X, section X: XXXXXXX

Industrial relations in Ghana is virtually based on the principle of free


collective bargaining between employees or their representatives and
employers. The role of the state or government is primarily one of
facilitating the relationship by providing the legislative structures or
framework within which each party must operate in order to ensure
industrial peace and harmony. Unit 1 covers the fundamentals of industrial
relations practice, the theoretical perspectives, actors in industrial relations
practice, the grievance procedure, strikes and lockouts, and the legal
framework of industrial relations in Ghana.

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:


 Understand the general principles, concepts and practices of industrial
relations that will facilitate the student’s understanding of human
behavior at the workplace as a prerequisite for the practice of industrial
relations
 Develop the interpersonal skills required to address issues of the
workplace in their future organizations
 Gain an understanding of the legal framework governing the practice of
industrial relations in Ghana
 Appreciate the importance of industrial relations practice to success in
business management
 Critically evaluate the efficacy and legal compliance of industrial
relations practices of organizations
 Advice management on the consequences of certain industrial practices
