AUTHOR’S BACKGROUND
Dante, in full Dante Alighieri, (born c. May 21–June 20, 1265,
Florence, Italy—died September 13/14, 1321, Ravenna), Italian
poet, prose writer, literary theorist, moral philosopher, and
political thinker. He is best known for the monumental epic
poem La commedia, later named La divina commedia (The Divine
Comedy).
CHARACTERIZATION
Dante A thirty-five-year-old man, spiritually lost and wandering
away from the True Way — the path of righteousness and of God.
Dante has become weak and is in need of spiritual guidance.
Luckily, a guide is sent to him and he embarks on a spiritual
journey to learn the true nature of sin.
Beatrice (beh-ah-TREE-cheh), his beloved, who is transformed into
an angel, one of Mary’s handmaids. Through her intercession, her
compassion, and her teaching, Dante’s passion is transmuted into
divine love, which brings him to a state of indescribable
blessedness.
Virgil, Dante’s master, the great Roman poet who guides him
through Hell and Purgatory. The most favored of the noble pagans
who dwell in Limbo without hope of heavenly bliss, he represents
the highest achievements of human reason and classical learning.
SETTING
Inferno - Dante's vision of Hell, which Dante has divided
into Nine Circles, ledges shaped like a nine-layered
inverted cone of measured depth and width established under
the city of Jerusalem The story takes place on the evening
of Good Friday through the morning of Easter Sunday in the
year 1300.
Purgatorio - the protagonist’s painful process of spiritual
rehabilitation commences; in fact, this part of the journey
may be considered the poem’s true moral starting point.
Paradiso – where true heroic fulfillment is achieved.
PLOT
Exposition:
Dante finds himself astray from his righteous path and alone in
the Dark Wood of Error. His path his blocked by three creatures
who represent Worldliness. He is met by the Roman poet Virgil,
who offers to take him on a journey around the creatures, into
Hell, so he can reach the Mount of Joy.
Conflict:
The points descend through the levels of Hell, finding each sin
and torment to be worse than the previous level. They meet the
lesser sinners, the lustful, the avaricious, and the prodigal.
They move into the deeper levels of Hell, where they meet
murderers, sexual deviants, sorcerers, hypocrites, thieves, and
finally, the traitors.
Climax:
They enter the lowest circle of Hell and find Lucifer himself in
the central ring, called Judecca. Lucifer has three faces and
wighty wings, which flap and freeze him in place. He has Judas
Iscariot, Brutus, and Cassius in his three mouths, each there
because they were treacherous to their masters.
Falling Action:
The poets descend through the levels of Hell, finding each sin
and torment to be worse than the previous level. They meet the
lesser sinners in limbo, the lustful, the avaricious, and the
prodigal. They move into the deeper levels of Hell, where they
meet murderers, sexual deviants, sorcerers, hypocrites, thieves,
and finally, the traitors.
Resolution:
They enter the lowest circle of Hell and find Lucifer himself in
the central ring, called Judecca. Lucifer has three faces and
mighty wings, which flap and freeze him in place. He has Judas
Iscariot, Brutus, and Cassius in his three mouths, each there
because they were treacherous to their masters.
Virgil and Dante climb onto Lucifer and down, passing the center of
gravity, until they are finally out of Hell.
Dante looks up at the stars and sees the Mount of Purgatory, his
next step in his journey of understanding his own personal turmoil.
He and Virgil continue on without rest.
CONFLICT
Man vs. Self - The main conflict of The Divine Comedy is Dante's
journey to find God in his life, while those sentenced to
punishment in Hell hinder him from the True Path. He also
struggles with the pity he feels for those he sees punished in
Hell, pity he knows he should not have towards the sinners. This
results in Dante's inner turmoil (self-conflicting).
THEME
Predestination - Throughout all three canticles of the
comedy, Dante the pilgrim continually asks about the concept
of predestination and its validity. Dante’s writings
continue to show that predestination does not have a role in
where you end up, whether it is Hell, Purgatory, or Heaven.
Life as a Journey - The Divine Comedy presents life as a
journey in which one man (representing all human beings)
must overcome obstacles (temptation and sin) to achieve the
ultimate goal, eternal bliss in the sight of God.
Salvation Through Repentance - Even if a person sins, he is
not lost. Sincere contrition and penitence will restore the
soul to eligibility for entrance into heaven.
Rehabilitation - Although confession of sins and penance
will restore a human being to a state of grace, after he
dies must he must purge himself of the stains sin leaves on
his soul if he has not done so in his lifetime. This
purgation in the afterlife takes place in purgatory.
Love - When he was a child of nine, Dante met Beatrice
Portinari and loved her from that moment on.
