Parts of speech:-
Classification of words into different categories
due to their different functions.
There are eight types of parts of speech.
Noun.
Pronoun.
Verb.
Adverb.
Adjective.
Preposition.
Conjunction.
Interjection.
Now, we discuss verb and its types in detail .
Verb:-
“A word that shows an action,
state of being or occurrence
is called verb”.
Explanation:-
Verb is Latin word which came from
“ Verbum” meaning word that in syntax
Which conveys an action (learn, walk,
Bring, read ) an occurrence(become, happen)
Or a state of being (be, exist, stand) in the
Usual description of English, the basic form
With or without a particle to. In the infintive
Verbs are inflected (modified in form ) to
encode Tense , aspect, mood, and voice.
Verbs are the action words in a sentence
that describe what the subject is doing.
Alone with This basic for nouns, verbs are the
main part of a sentence or phrase, telling a story
about what is taking place.Infact, without
a verb , full thoughts can’t be properly
conveyed, and even the simplest sentence
by itself, with the subject ,in most case you,
implied, such as Sing and Drive. The basic form
a verb is known as infinitive. The forms call
love , break, and go are all infinite.
Almost all verbs have two other verbs called
participles.
Examples:-
Action:-
He is walking.
Access of eating is bad.
He knows how to speak English.
State:-
The doctor advised him to take rest.
He is standing in the front of the door.
He is in unconscious state.
Occurrence:-
Strom and Earthquake are natural happenings.
He wants to become a doctor.
Ali Hassan became a senator last year.
Types of Verb:-
There are three types of verb.
1. Principle or main verb.
2. Auxiliary or helping verb.
3. Linking verb.
Main verb:-
“ A verb that can survive
Independently and does
not need any helping verb”.
Explanation:-
Main verb is also called the lexical verb or
the principal verb. This term refers to the
important verb in the sentence, the one
that typically shows the action or state of
being of the subject. Main verb can stand
alone or they can be used helping verb.
Different helping verbs help and support
the main verb in different ways. For instance they
can show tense (which indicates when an action
happens), ability, intention or possibility.
The primary helping verbs are “to be”, “to
do” and “to have”.
Examples:-
I did empty the trash.
I had seen the movie before.
The sun rises in the east.
My university is near my house.
Ali is a naughty boy.
Types of main verb:-
There are two types of main verb.
1.Transitive main verb.
2.Intransitive main verb.
Transitive main verb:-
“ A verb that needs an object for
the subject”.
Examples:-
They attended the party.
Ali fed the cat.
Ahmad loves cake.
Birds have feathers.
I like English.
He is eating a mango.
Intransitive main verb:-
“ A verb that does not need an object
for the subject”.
Examples:-
The wind blew.
She plays.
Ali laughed.
Mr. Ali speaks loudly.
The ship sank rapidly.
Ahmad jogs every day.
Auxiliary Verb:-
“An auxiliary verb is a verb that adds
functional or grammatical meaning
to the clause in which it appears, such
as to express tense, aspect, modality,
voice emphases, auxiliary verb are also
called helping verb”.
Meaning of auxiliary word:-
“The Latin word “Auxiliary” means “help”
and auxiliary means something that “help”
by providing backup or support”.
Auxiliary in grammar a helping element,
Typically a verb that adds meaning to the
basic meaning of the main verb in a clause
auxiliaries can convey information about
tense, mood, person and number.
An auxiliary verb occurs with a main
verb that is in the form of infinitive or a
participle. There is a further sets of auxiliary
verbs noun as Modal verb or modal auxiliary
verbs. These combine with other verbs to
express necessity , possibility, Intention, or
ability. The modal auxiliary verbs are must ,
shall, will, should, would, ought( to) can,
could, may ,might.
Examples:-
He is playing cricket.
He is going to school.
I can do it.
The flowers are bright.
I feel scared.
I have finished my work.
Types of Auxiliary verb:-
There are two types of auxiliary verbs.
1.Primary auxiliary verb.
2.Modal auxiliary verb.
Primary Auxiliary verb:-
“Basically English has three primary
auxiliary verbs: “do”,” be”,” have”.
All three take part in the formation
of various grammatical constructions
but conveys very little meaning
themselves”.
Examples:-
Bilal is dancing.
Ahmad works across town.
Our team has to win the match.
She was using my mobile.
Remember:-
When a sentence is in present or past simple
sentence we use the auxiliary verb to form it
into a question word.
Modal Auxiliary verb:-
“Modal verb is a verb that is used
with another verb to express a
mood or tense”.
Examples:-
She must attend the party.
Can I open the window?
I may be home late.
I shall go to Australia.
China will always stand by Pakistan.
One should do ones duty.
Remember:-
Model verb indicate “modality” that is like hood ability.
Linking verb:-
“A linking verb is a verb which
connects a subject to its predicate
without expressing an action”.
Explanation:-
A linking verb is used to identify or describe its
subject. The word, phrase or clause which follows a
linking verb to re-identify or describe the subject is
called subject complement.
Examples:-
He was painted.
He is frustrating.
She is happy.
He was happy.
Stars are shining.
Pakistan is a famous country.
A list of linking verbs:-
The most common linking verb is the verb
“to be”. Other common ones relate to the five
senses (to look, to feel, to smell, to sound,
to taste).
List of common linking verbs:-
To be (am, is, was, were,
will be, was being, has been)
To appear
To become
To feel
To look
To seem
To smell
To sound
To taste
Remember:-
linking verbs do not express an action.
Done
