Plate 1: First Assessment: Concepts: Perspective Diminution

The document defines and describes various concepts related to perspective drawing: - Perspective involves receding lines that appear to meet at a vanishing point on the horizon. Diminution decreases the size of columns towards the top to correct the optical illusion of the top being longer. - One-point perspective uses a single vanishing point and is used for scenes viewed directly from the front. Two-point perspective uses two vanishing points, one on each end of the horizon, and nothing is drawn to exact scale. - Three-point perspective is used for tall buildings to overcome the height distortion that can occur with one- or two-point perspective. It adds a third vanishing point to provide the desired vertical recession.

PLATE 1: FIRST ASSESSMENT: CONCEPTS

PERSPECTIVE- AN APPROXIMATE REPRESENTATION, ON A FLAT SURFACE, SHOWS RECEDING LINES

IN A DRAWING THAT ARE FARTHEST FROM YOUR VIEW APPEAR TO MEET.

DIMINUTION- THE DECREASE IN SIZE OF A COLUMN TOWARDS THE TOP, TYPICALLY EMPLOYED AS A
DEVICE USED TO OVERCOME OR CORRECT AN OPTICAL APPEARANCE OF THE TOP BEING LONGER
THAN THE BOTTOM.

OVERLAPPING- FORMS EXTENDING AND COVERING PART OF AN AREA OR SURFACE THAT HAS A
COMMON ALIGNMENT; IT MAY BE SLIGHT OR SIGNIFICANT, AS LONG AS THERE IS A COMMON SURFACE
BETWEEN THE ELEMENTS.

CONVERGENCE- MEASURE OF AN OBJECT WITH RESPECT TO ITS DIMENSION.

FORESHORTENING- IT REFERS TO THE VISUAL EFFECT OR THE OPTICAL ILLUSION THAT AN

OBJECT OR DISTANCE APPEARS SHORTER THAN IT ACTUALLY APPEARS BECAUSE IT IS ANGLED
TOWARDS THE VIEWER.

ONE- POINT PERSPECTIVE- IT IS A DRAWING IN WHICH THE TRUE SCALE AND ALL RECEDING
SIDES ARE PROJECTED TO A SINGLE VANISHING POINT LOCATED ON THE HORIZON. IT EXIST WHEN THE
PAINTING SCALE IS PARALLEL TO TWO AXES OF A RECTILINEAR SCENE, COMPOSED OF LINEAR
ELEMENTS THAT INTERSECT ONLY AT RIGHT ANGLES. THIS TYPE OF PERSPECTIVE IS TYPICALLY USED
FOR ROADS, RAILROADS (TRACK) OR BUILDINGS VIEWED AS SO THAT THE FRONT VIEW IS DIRECTLY
FACING THE VIEWER AS USED FOR INTERIOR PRESENTATION, IT IS A DRAWING IN WHICH ALL THE
INTERSECTION OF LINES BETWEEN THE WALLS, FLOORS, CEILINGS AND FURNITURES MAY BE
PROJECTED TO ONE VANISHING POINT. IT IS SIMILAR TO DRAWING THE INSIDE OF THE BOX WITH FRONT
OF THE BOX REMOVED WHERE WE LOOK.

TWO-POINT PERSPECTIVE- IS ONE IN WHICH THE RECEDING VANISHING POINTS, ONE ON EACH
END OF THE HORIZON LINE. IN A TWO-POINT PERSPECTIVE, NO SIDES ARE DRAWN EXACTLY TO SCALE.
ALL SIDES RECEDE TO VANISHING POINT. IT HAS ONE SET OF LINES PARALLEL TO THE PICTURE PLANE
AND TWO-SIDES OBLIQUE TO IT. THIS SETUP WILL REQUIRE TWO VANISHING POINTS, LINES PARALLEL
OBLIQUE TO THE PICTURE PLANE AND THE TWO SIDES OBLIQUE TO IT. AS USED FOR INTERIOR
PRESENTATION, IT IS PREPARED TO SHOW THE FINAL DESIGN AND DÉCOR OF TWO- POINT
PERSPECTIVE OF TWO-WALLS. THIS TYPE OF DRAWING IS SIMILAR TO THE BASE LINE ON AN EXTERIOR
TWO-POINT PERSPECTIVE.

THREE-POINT PERSPECTIVE- IS USED TO OVERCOME THE HEIGHT DISTORTION OF TALL

BUILDINGS. IN A ONE OR TWO STOREY BUILDING, THE VERTICAL LINES RECEDE SO SLIGHTLY THAT FOR
TALL BUILDINGS APPEAR SMALLER THAN THE AREA NEAREST THE VIEWER. THE THIRD VANISHING
POINT IS USED TO PROVIDE THE DESIRED RECESSION. THE GREATER THE VERTICAL DISTANCE
BETWEEN HORIZON AND VANISHING POINT, THE MORE CLOSELY THE VERTICAL LINES APPROACH A
PARALLEL STATE AND THE REST IS LESS CONSIDERED AS DISTORTED.
