TRAVEL JOURNAL ADVICE

Since I seem to be telling everyone whose travel journal I read the same thing, I might as well tell you
all again the advice I've been giving you about the travel journals from the beginning.

THE PARTS OF THE JOURNAL


INTRODUCTION
This is introducing the reader to the whole trip that you took that you took this one story from. It’s to
give context to the reader, both about trip and about you. It should get the reader interested (or not)
in the type of focus your journal has, your particular voice, and the types of stories you'll be telling in
your journal. This part should also show how you are unique from other people and what makes you
interesting. It should also be consistent with the tone of your journal.

TRAVEL JOURNAL
 This is the specific story that you're going to present.
 This is not travel advice, it is a chronicle of your experience (not "you should," but rather "I did").
 This is not your entire trip or even one entire day of your trip; it is one small piece of the puzzle of
the whole story of your trip which you will present in pieces in your journal (theoretically).
 The story should be small, but with lots of detail. This is what makes a story interesting and unique
to you.
 The story should include discussion of the cultural practices, rituals or interactions you had with the
local culture so that the reader can learn something about the local culture and the place.

This is why I’ve been telling you to work on this little by little for the past month.

ADVICE ABOUT HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR TRAVEL JOURNAL


 read or re-read:
 the article “How to write the perfect travel journal,”
 the project description,
 the sample travel journal I’m sharing with you here. Remember that this is an example of an
old version of the project, so when you read it, focus on the story about going to the
Eastside Market and Deli for an example.

 review your travel journal with the peer evaluation checklist or the grading rubric in dropbox
and your course packet.
 go to the English Learning Center (Room 210C) and get help from one of the monitors on duty
with the use of the past tenses.

And finally, keep in mind the following things:


give more details,
make me connect with your story, and
check your use of the past tense.
