SUICIDE IS NOT A SOLUTION – DO
NOT TRY TO PREDICT YOUR
FUTURE
Suicide can be defined as an act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and
intentionally. Suicide is not a choice to survive or a choice to escape. Instead, successful suicide is
inevitably mortal. Suicide is the third leading cause of death and injury among adolescents and
young adults in the worldwide. Suicide is a serious public health problem. According to the World
Health Organisation (2004) an estimate approximately one million people die from suicide
worldwide annually, and 10 to 20 times more people attempts suicide
There are many causes for youths wanting to commit suicide. Thus, we must be aware of the
symptoms for suicide in order to prevent suicide from happening.

WHAT DRIVE TEENS TOWARDS SUICIDE?
STRESS
Every human living in this world has stress that may cause them to take action to events and to
improve themselves to be better and rise to the challenge.
Level of stress is seems to be playing a vital role in affecting people especially the youths towards
committing suicide. Many researchers have discovered that stressful life events increases the risk of
youths choosing suicide as the only solution. Stressful events such as family and romance conflicts or
the presence of disciplinary problems frequently predate suicidal behaviour
pressure at school to get good grades and pick a career at such a young age agitates
teens and becomes too much for them after a certain point. This pressure is increased by parents and
families to live up to a certain standard. Maintaining this is not always easy since everyone is born with
different talents and likings. When the pressure gets too much many teens decide to take the pressure off
once and for all.
DEPRESSION
Depression is unquestionably the most common reason why people take their life. Depression is a
severe dejection that is accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and meagerness typically felt over a
periods of time. In another words, it is an illness where people's thoughts, moods, behaviour and
feelings are "infected.Suicide is the permanent solution for depressed people as they think there are
no other solutions to the temporary problems they are experiencing. A depressed youth may feel that
there is no another way out from issues, no other getaway from emotional pain, or no way outof a
desperate sorrow.
DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE
It is in the teen years that people discover the effects of alcohol and drugs. What starts out as just experimenting
turns into a fully fledged addiction. Being young and impressionable, these teens, spurred on by their friends
find it hard to kick the addiction. Some tend to go overboard this is when they overdose and most do not survive.
With alcohol their liver and internal organs start failing till one by one they end slowly end up taking their own
lives. Some overdose on drugs and alcohol because of their various problems at home or in school – not
everyone comes equipped to handle tough situations.
BULLYING AND PEER PRESSURE
Bullying is now a more spoken about phenomenon than it was in earlier days. It is also more common and
practiced than it was way back when. Kids in their early teens, entering high school tend to experience a bit more
bullying than usual. From pranks to name calling some teens can be really mean people – pushing the other to
the far end. Teens who are bullied feel cornered and their self-esteem and confidence is beaten down to the bare
minimum. They feel worthless and incapable of anything productive. This leads them to think and imagine that
their life truly is worthless and therefore no longer feel the need to keep on living. They work into depressions
and end up taking their own lives. Most teens are scared of further bullying and never bring up what’s happening
to their teachers or parents and these things tend to go unnoticed for years on end.
CYBER-BULLYING
We live in a time where technology occupies most of our time. Teens look online for recreation and friends and
as this may have a lot of pros; it also comes with its cons. A lot of teens get made fun off and mocked online for
various reasons, even for the things they like or dislike and their beliefs. This leads to having low self-esteem
and eventually a whole list of other problems associated with it. Many work into depressions and other mental
disorders and eventually take their own lives because of the mean and demeaning things told to them. After
repeatedly being told how worthless they are they start to be believe and many times it’s just a downhill battle
from there on out.
EMOTIONAL NEGLECT
Parents these days seemed to be involved in their own lives with no concern for their teenage children. In doing
this they sometimes ignore the signs of suicide. Emotional neglect leads to the teen feeling forgotten about and
alone. They feel like their existence makes no real difference and if they were to end their lives no one would
even notice their absence. This emotional neglect has a worse effect than some people can imagine.
SEXUAL ABUSE
Many teens grow up with being sexually abused, some experience sexual abuse later in their teens. Whatever the
case is, sexual abuse has more than just long lasting physical damages; it is extremely emotionally damaging as
well. The unimaginable pain the person is going to leads them to take their own life with frustration. In places
like India, the rape victim also becomes the community’s outcast. Being raped is already more damaging and
doesn’t need to the added baggage of society’s hypocrisy.
ANXIETY
The suicidor will feel fear, worry, and hopelessness. In this situation, symptons of anxiety will be shown
physically and mentally. For instance, sweating, stomach aches, muscle weakness. Someone who has anxiety
might experiences sense of panic. A study examined the rates of anxiety, mood and substances abuse disorder
among teenagers. The result of the study shown that the level of anxiety will have higher risk of suicide.

HOW COUNSELLING CAN HELP...
JOIN ON DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES LIKE SPORTS..
Sports have been viewed as a way to stay healthy and in shape, but their importance goes much further. As a
matter of fact, playing sports teaches life lessons like discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, accountability,
and teamwork.
Studies have shown that exercise increases blood flow to the brain and helps the body build more connections
between nerves, leading to increased concentration, enhanced memory, stimulated creativity, and better-
developed problem solving skills. In short, playing sports helps your brain grow and makes it work better.
In addition to that, exercising is a great way to get out of the stressful student life that is all about homework,
presentations, and group projects. In fact, playing sports helps students relax and reduce their anxiety. Health
care professionals recommend physical activity as a key ingredient to any stress-management activity.
FIND GOD..
Psalm 34:17 “When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their
troubles.”
Since God is omniscient, nothing escapes His attention and so we can rely on the fact that God hears our cry for
help but the point is that we must cry out for help. God helps those who cannot help themselves and when we cry
out for help we can be certain that “the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.” When our troubles
are too much to bear, cry out to Him. He is ready, willing, and able to deliver us out of these, including those
times of great sorrow, sadness, depression, and even when suicide crosses our mind. The real question is, “Will
we believe God?” We have every reason to.
