Removal
Turn the front wheels to the straight-ahead position
Remove the key from the ignition switch
Disconnect the battery earth cable (luggage compartment)
Battery: procedures for disconnection/reconnection
Remove the engine upper cover
Remove the engine lower cover (two parts)
Remove the noise insulation covers
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe
Separate the exhaust system at the double clamp
Remove the front exhaust pipe
Disconnect the catalytic converter from the gearbox bracket
Drain the coolant
Remove the plenum chamber

Remove the air filter housing
Remove the exhaust/turbocharger flange nuts
Remove the front exhaust pipe
Disconnect the catalytic converter from the gearbox bracket
Remove the engine/gearbox upper attaching bolts 3-6
Drain the coolant
Remove the plenum chamber

Remove the engine upper cover

Remove the starter motor upper bolt 1
Remove the spacer 3
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe
Separate the exhaust system at the double clamp
Fit the special tool to support the engine 10-222A, 10-222A/3, 10-222A/11 10-222 A,
10-222A/3,
10-222A/11
Remove the front exhaust pipe
Disconnect the catalytic converter from the gearbox bracket
Mark the steering wheel position
Remove the steering column universal joint
Drain the coolant
Remove the plenum chamber

Remove the key from the ignition switch

Remove the engine upper cover
Remove the engine lower cover (two parts)
Remove the noise insulation covers
Remove the power steering pressure line bracket 1
Remove the triangular stiffener(s) 2
Remove the cross member 3
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe
Separate the exhaust system at the double clamp
Convertible models:
Remove the brace 1, 2
Remove the front exhaust pipe
Disconnect the catalytic converter from the gearbox bracket
Remove the power steering pressure line bracket 1
Remove the triangular stiffener(s) 2, 3
Drain the coolant
Remove the plenum chamber

Removal
Engage
Turn thesixth
frontgear
wheels to the straight-ahead position
Follow

Pull out
Disconnect the battery earth cable (luggage compartment) A
Move Battery:

Remove the engine upper cover
Remove the engine lower cover (two parts)
Remove the noise insulation covers
Remove the flywheel inspection cover plate
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe
Separate the exhaust system at the double clamp
Remove the bolts 3x
Note: Turn the engine clockwise
Remove the front exhaust pipe
Disconnect the catalytic converter from the gearbox bracket
Remove the right-hand drive shaft cover
Disconnect the drive shafts from the gearbox
Vehicles with Start and Stop system:
Disconnect the neutral position sensor
Drain the coolant
Remove the plenum chamber

Turn the front wheels to the straight-ahead position
Remove the key from the ignition switch
Disconnect the battery earth cable (luggage compartment)
Battery: procedures for disconnection/reconnection
Remove the engine upper cover
Remove the engine lower cover (two parts)
Remove the noise insulation covers
All vehicles:
Remove the clutch slave cylinder B
Secure to the vehicle
Remove the nut A
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe
Separate the exhaust system at the double clamp
Disconnect the gear selector lever A
Use a special tool: X = T 40160
Remove the front exhaust pipe
Disconnect the catalytic converter from the gearbox bracket
Vehicles with oil cooler
Fully clamp the hoses
Use the special tools 3094
Place a draining tray under the gearbox
Open the retaining spring
Disconnect the coolant hoses
Drain the coolant
Remove the plenum chamber

Remove the engine upper cover
Remove the engine lower cover (two parts)
Remove the noise insulation covers
Remove the torque rod bracket
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe
Separate the exhaust system at the double clamp
Support the gearbox
Use the special tools VAG 1383A, T40173 VAG 1383 A, T
40173
Fit the safety straps
If applicable:
Remove the heat shield from the subframe
Remove the front exhaust pipe
All vehicles:the catalytic converter from the gearbox bracket
Disconnect
Remove the subframe
Drain the coolant
Remove the plenum chamber

Lower the gearbox slightly
Removal A = 80 mm
Turn the front wheels to the straight-ahead position
Remove the key from the ignition switch
Disconnect the battery earth cable (luggage compartment)
Battery: procedures for disconnection/reconnection
Remove the engine upper cover
Remove the engine lower cover (two parts)
Remove the noise insulation covers
Disconnect the exhaust gas temperature sensor
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe
Separate the exhaust system at the double clamp
Disconnect the electrical connector A
Use a special tool: X = T 40138
Remove the bolt B, C
Remove the front exhaust pipe
Disconnect the catalytic converter from the gearbox bracket
Remove the starter motor lower bolt 2
Remove the starter motor but do not disconnect
Drain the coolant
Remove the plenum chamber

Remove the key from the ignition switch

Remove the engine upper cover
Remove the engine lower cover (two parts)
Remove the noise insulation covers
Remove the remaining engine/gearbox attaching bolts 7 - 10
Disconnect the front exhaust pipe
Separate the exhaust system at the double clamp
Separate the gearbox from the engine
Remove the gearbox
Manual transmission: removal/installation (0B2),4WD
Installation
Installation is in the reverse order of removal
Installation notes
Check the dowel pin(s) for damage
Align the engine/gearbox A -> B
Remove the front exhaust pipe
Disconnect the catalytic converter from the gearbox bracket
Torque settings
Drain the coolant
Bolts, gearbox to engine:
Remove the plenum chamber

Renew if necessary
Bolts: 1: 65 Nm
Bolts: 2 - 6, 10
Stage 1: 30 Nm
Stage 2: 90°
Bolts: 7-9
Stage 1: 15 Nm
Stage 2: the front exhaust pipe
Disconnect 90°
Drive shafts:
Separate the exhaust system at the double clamp
Use new bolt(s) 70 Nm
Cross member:
Use new bolt(s) 70 Nm
Triangular stiffener(s):
Remove the front exhaust pipe
Disconnect the catalytic converter from the gearbox bracket
Drain the coolant
Remove the plenum chamber

Disconnect the catalytic converter from the gearbox bracket 40173
Removal tool: T40138 T 40138

Clamp: 3094
Drain the coolant
Remove the plenum chamber
