4WD Steering Knuckles

MODEL IDENTIFICATION

NOTE: Unless otherwise specified, references to Pickup include F-150, F-250 and F-350
models.

"U" Excursion, Expedition, Explorer, Mountaineer & Navigator
(1) Vehicle series is fifth character of VIN.
(2) "X" for Super Cab models.
(3) "W" for Crew Cab models.

DESCRIPTION
Steering knuckles are attached to upper and lower control arms or ball joints allowing steering knuckles to
pivot. Tie rod ends attach to arms of knuckle for steering.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION


KNUCKLE

Removal & Installation

WARNING: Excursion, Expedition, Navigator and Pickup may be equipped with rear
air suspension. To avoid personal injury or damage to vehicle, air
suspension switch must be turned off before hoisting vehicle. Air
suspension switch is located near right front kick panel.

CAUTION: Half shaft hub nut and washer assembly cannot be reused, discard
upon removal. NEW hub nut and washer must used during
installation.

Measure vehicle ride height. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove front brake
caliper, and secure aside. Remove brake rotor and dust shield.

2. On Excursion, Ranger, F-250 and F-350, remove hub. See LOCKING HUBS article . Drive axle shaft
main seal out of knuckle. Remove axle shaft and main seal. Remove tie rod end from steering knuckle.
Remove upper ball joint nut. Remove insert. Remove lower ball joint nut and remove knuckle.
3. On all models except Excursion, Ranger, F-250 and F-350, remove front wheel hub nut. Remove front
brake anti-lock sensor connector, and secure aside. Remove torsion bar cover plate. Measure and record
length of torsion bar adjuster bolt for reassembly. Relieve torsion bar tension.
4. Remove pinch bolt from upper ball joint. Remove tie rod end from steering knuckle. Remove lower ball
joint castle nut. Separate steering knuckle from lower ball joint, and remove from vehicle. Support axle
shaft aside with wire.
5. On all models, to install, reverse removal procedures. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . On all
models except Excursion, F-250 and F-350, measure vehicle ride height and adjust as necessary.
