Adjectives
Adjectives tell us more about nouns. These are describing words. They add
something to the meaning of a noun E.g. Pune is a clean city. (The word ‘clean’
tells us about Pune city)
Types of adjectives:
Adjectives of quality: They show the kind or quality of a person or thing.
(Example. Happy, intelligent, thin, clean)
Adjectives of quantity: They talk about quantity of a thing. (E.g. some, little,
less, enough)
Adjectives of number: They talk about how many numbers of persons or
things. (Seven, five, first)
Possessive adjectives: They talk about ownership/possession. (E.g. My pencil,
our car)
Interrogative adjectives: They ask question. (E.g. Whose pen is this?)
Demonstrative adjectives: They point out the things. (e.g.This, That etc.)
Degree – forms of adjectives
Positive - Simple form of an adjective.
Comparative - Comparison between two persons and things.
Superlative - Comparison among more than two.

If adjectives are of two syllables use more, much and most.
Use suitable adjectives. The adjectives used must be relevant. (Beautiful boy is
wrong)
Verb + ed = Participle Adjective E.g. Fried rice, boiled eggs, typed report,
computerised statement.
Verb + ing = Participle Adjective E.g. Dancing doll, Jumping jack, inspiring
thought.
Order of adjectives –
Remember COMP – Colour, Origin , Material & Purpose ( Sequence)
*Size, shape adjectives come before colour material adjectives . (Round
leather purse, huge white building)
After a ‘copula verb’ (seem, look, appear, feel) He looks healthy. (‘Healthy’ is an
adjective, look is a copula verb)
