APPLICATION:
1. How does O Yong-su present the setting of his story? Is the description of the village and its
people concentrated in one particular portion of the selection or is it found in various sections
and given part by part? Does the manner of presenting affect the reader? If not, why? If so,
how?
- 0 Yong-su presents the setting of his story by giving descriptions of the village and its people
in various sections and is explained part by part. The way on how he presents the setting
affect the reader since it helps the reader to imagine the scenarios, to have a clear picture
on how it took place and how the place looks like, also on how people communicate or
express their feelings. It helps the reader to understand more the context of the story and
imaginably put himself/herself on the story.
2. Give a character sketch of the taffyman. Does he possess one dominating passion or does he
have drives that are pitted against each other?
- At first, the taffyman doesn’t really care of how he looks like and how he behaved. He’s
passion is just for the taffy and bringing joy to the kids in the village, but it changes the
moment he met Nami. He started to become conscious of himself; his hair which was
formerly messy was now applied with pomade and straightened it with a comb. He even
also dressed up well unlike before and he doesn’t stop for a brief cigarette anymore before
moving on to the next village. He changes a lot as he fell in love for Nami.
3. At the end of the story, the taffyman is seen watching Nami from the top of Urum Pass? Do you find his
action logical? Why?
- The way he thinks that Nami will just went somewhere and will head back to the village afterwards
that is why he just decided to see her from a far, somehow makes sense a little bit. But the way he
saw Nami being dressed that way, he should have even think more logically. In that way he could act
in differently aside from watching Nami from the top of Urum Pass. So he could might ask her, pursue
her, or just even by simply expressing his feelings to her before he loses the love of his life. Not that
he went somewhere just to watch her leaving and not coming back without him knowing.
4. What do Nami’s new jade-green rubber shoes signify? How essential are they to the denouement?
- Nami’s new jade- green rubber shoes are the only shoes that the character treasures the most. It is so
important to her that she got mad when Yuni and Yongi gave it to the taffyman in exchange for taffy.
It signifies that the taffyman had already returned the shoes that Nami asks him angrily for. And that
Nami is not mad at all with the taffy man. In some narrative piece, it could be a great start of their
story but sadly in this one, it signifies the end in between the two of them.
5. What is the role played by Yongi and Yuni in the narrative? Do they help in the progress of the action?
- Yuni and Yongi played as daughters of a salary man named Ch’olsu where in Nami works. They
serve as a bridge to the gap between Nami and the Taffyman, that through them, the main
characters were able to meet and start a conversation with. They are indeed helpful in the
progress of the action.
6. Create a character web showing the relationship of characters in Nami and the Taffyman.
Taffyman- the man who usually gives taffy to the kids, play jokes and
hang out with them. The man who fell inlove for Nami as the moment
he saw her.

Nami- housemaid of Ch’olsu; treasures the jade- green rubber shoes a

lot. The woman where taffy man fell in love with.

Ch’olsu- a salary man where Nami works for. Has two daughters
named Yuni and Yungi.

Yuni and Yongi- daughter of Ch’olsu, a little stubborn one. Loves the
taffy of the taffyman

Father of Nami- who went to see Nami to bring her with him in order
to get married. Old enough to have more white hair than black and had
wrinkled skin on his longish face.

Wife of Ch’olsu- who failed to convinced Nami’s father to not let Nami
get married at an early age. Mother of Yuni and Yongi.
