CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The first incarnation of the lollipop was probably created by cave people

thousands of years ago who collected honey from beehives with a stick. Not wanting to

waste the sweet nectar, they most likely licked the stick, thus inventing the world’s first

lollipop. Good for them (good for us). Archaeologists believe that ancient Chinese,

Arabs, and Egyptians all produced fruit and nut confections that they "candied" in

honey, which serves as a preservative, and inserted sticks into to make easier to eat.

(Prince, 2011)

Astoundingly, acccording to the website of Manila Bulletin it was stated that

Malunggay is named as the most nutritious green leafy vegetable in the philippines for

its remarkable amount of vitamins and minerals and health benefits. Malunggay, known

as horse-radish tree or Ben oil tree in English and whose scientific name is Moringa

oleifera is indeed a very useful plant. It is rich in nutrients; it helps clean turbid water

because it acts as a flocculant that is able to precipitate suspended particles; it is a

source of oil; and it has some medicinal properties.

According to experts, malunggay has over 90 nutrients, many different

antioxidants, packed with different vitamins and minerals especially iron and essential

amino acids (e.g. methionine and cysteine) and is able to cure over 300 health related

problems. Malunggay is easy to plant and is drought resistant. It is grown all over the

Philippines as a backyard tree and is available throughout the year.

The researchers wanted to make a twist on making a more delicious yet healthier

flavored lollipop by mixing fresh malunggay, also known as moringa leaves because of
its nutrients and beneficial characteristic. Also the researchers wants to analyse the

profit by selling malunggay lollipop and it’s acceptability as perceived by the

respondents.

Background of the Study

Nearly all Americans (97%) report eating candy at least once per year; yet, on a

given day, only approximately one-fourth of the US population aged ≥2 y consumes

candy. Among all Americans, candy contributes a relatively small proportion of calories,

added sugars, and saturated fat to the total diet, and recent research suggests that

current levels of candy consumption are not associated with risk of weight gain and

cardiovascular disease in children and adults. Providing guidance for the consumption

of candy in moderation requires an understanding of various behavioral health-related

factors that influence candy consumption. A roundtable of behavioral nutrition experts,

researchers, and nutrition educators met to discuss recent data on intakes of candy,

health outcomes associated with usual candy intake, and the impact of behavioral

strategies, including restriction, education, and environmental awareness, on modifying

eating behaviors to achieve moderate intakes of candy. Restricting access to palatable

foods, whether self-imposed or by parental control, may have potentially negative

consequences. Techniques and insight into how to adopt “moderation” in candy

consumption, from effective parental practices to environmental strategies that facilitate

behavior change without a high degree of effort, were identified as important next steps

toward sustainable dietary guidance related to the role of candy and other treats in a

healthy lifestyle.(Duyff, Birch, Bredbenner, Johnson, Mattes, Murphy, Nicklas, Rollins,

Wansik, 2015)
There are many recipes for malunggay or moringga, considered by many

scientists as the miracle vegetable or the healthiest vegetable on earth. This is because

malunggay is such as adaptable, healthful, low-cat, and low-maintenance vegetable.

(Kerilyo, 2018)

Lollipops are an old fashioned favorite, and sure it’s easy to buy them in the store,

but it is even more fun to make them at home. The best part about making your own

lollipops is that you can completely customize them-choose your favorite flavorings and

create combinations that appeal to you and your family and friends. Coconut lime? You

got it! Spicy pine apple mint? Sounds delicious! Once you master the basic recipe, you’ll

love crafting new combos and experimenting with your own lollipops. (Elizabeth Libay,

2018)

The researchers come up with the idea of making malunggay lollipop because as

we all know malungay contain so many nutrient while the lollipop candy is very popular

to the children. And also the lollipop is not as complicated as others to make and can be

a homemade while the malunggay is one of the common vegetables that can be seen in

the backyard. So the researchers decided to study on putting the lollipop and malungay

as one so that the popularity of the lollipop candy and the nutrient that will get in

malungay will benefit with one another.

The researchers want to analyse the profit that will be gained in selling the

malungay lollipop and also, the reserachers will conduct a survey to know the

acceptability to the malunggay lollipop in terms of taste, size, presentation, and price.
Scope and Limitation of the Study

The topic of the stidy is the profitability analysis of malunggay lollipop where in the

researchers will create a new healthy vegetable lollipop and sell it to the respective

respondents and analyse the gained profit and its acceptability in terms of taste, size,

presentation, and price.

The venue of the study will be at Bagong Nayon i Elementary School located at

GSIS Avenue, Cogeo Village Brgy. Bagong Nayon 1 Antipolo City.

This chapter presents the discussion of Expected Output and Justification,

Conceptual Framework, Review of Related Literature and Related Studies, Hypothesis,

and the Definition of Terms.

Discussion of Expected Output and Justification

The researchers will develop much healthier lollipop using malunggay as a main

ingredient. The researchers are expected to analyse the difference of the profit that will

be gained. The malunggay contains many nutritional factor that can provide a source of

energy for the respondents. Making malunggay lollipop can be an alternative for a much

healthier snack. And can be a help to those who are not fond of eating vegetables but

loves eating different kinds of snack. The researchers are expected to come up with an

output which will going to be a brochure. Brochures can be a very effective marketing

tool and almost every business uses one. They are usually used to highlight a

company's benefits, products and services for a customer. Since the focus of the study

is analysing the profit of malunggay lollipop, it will be promoted in a kind of brochure as

an output of the study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter will represent the review of related literature and studies.

Related Literature

Moringa oleifera, also known as drumstick tree or the “miracle tree”, is a highly

valued and versatile plant which belongs to the Moringaceae family. It is a fast-growing,

deciduous tree that is native to India and is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical

areas all over Asia, Africa, and South America. It is widely known by many other names,

including Horseradish tree and Ben oil tree. Although modern science has recently

discovered its value, moringa has been imparting a multitude of benefits across various

cultures since ancient times. It was valued by the Romans, Egyptians, and Greeks for

its medicinal impact on a range of ailments. Today, its usage has been encouraged by

various humanitarian organizations to combat malnutrition and its effects in poverty-

stricken regions, mainly due to its economic viability and rapid growth. Due to its

extraordinary and unmatched range of medicinal benefits, it was named the “miracle

tree” during the food crisis in Africa. Its tree has a thick, whitish bark with droopy, fragile

branches and long, green, oval-shaped leaflets. In Ayurvedic therapy, it is valued for its

impressive range of therapeutic uses, commonly attributed to its antifungal,

antiviral, antidepressant, and anti-inflammatory properties. In some areas, it is simply

known as ‘shigru’.(Patil, 2018)

According to the website of Medical Health Guide, Malunggay (Moringa Oleifera),

is a popular plant known for high nutritional value as well as an herbal medicine.

Malunggay is a plant that grows in the tropical climates such as the Philippines, India

and Africa. Malunggay is widely used as vegetable ingredient in cooking, as herbal

medicine for a number of illness and other practical uses. The Malunggay plant can

grow to as high as 9 meters with erect white trunks. The compound leaf has about 3 to

9 leaflets. Malunggay has white fragrant flowers that produces long pods with 3-angled

winged seeds. Malunggay may be propagated by planting its seeds about an inch in the

ground or matured malunggay stem cuttings of about 3 feet in length may also be

planted into the ground. Planted malunggay cuttings grows faster compared to planted

seeds.

Malunggay Nutrient Content:  Malunggay contains three times the potassium in

bananas, four times the vitamin A in carrots, seven times the vitamin C in oranges and 2

times the calcium in a glass of milk. These substances are potent antioxidants that

protect the cells of the body from getting damaged by free radicals. Available Form of

Malunggay Leaves: fresh leaves or vegetables, powder or supplement form, and tea.

Some products where malunggay leaves are included are bread, oil (for cooking and

cosmetic ingredients), shampoo and conditioner, ice cream, etc… ( (pure moringa by

Baterna Farms, 2018)

According to the Biotechnology Program Office of the Department of Agriculture,

the malunggay has been found by biochemists and molecular anthropologiststo be rich

in vitamins C and A, iron, and high density lipoprotein or good cholesterol.Due to its

high calcium content (four times the calcium in milk), lactating mothersin the Philippines
are often advised to consume malunggay leaves to produce more milk for their babies.

The young malunggay leaves are being boiled and drink as tea.Malunggay leaves are

loaded with nutrients. Gram for gram, malunggay leavesalso contain two times the

protein in milk. Likewise, it contains three times the potassiumin bananas and four times

the vitamin A in carrots.Health nutritionists claim that an ounce of malunggay has the

same Vitamin Ccontent as seven oranges. An important function of vitamin C not known

to many is its being an antioxidant. In fact, it has been recognized and accepted by the

US Food andDrug Administration as one of the four dietary antioxidants, the others

being vitamin E, beta-carotene and selenium. (A dietary oxidant is a substance in food

that significantlydecreases the adverse effects of harmful chemicals). There are more

health benefits. Vivencio Mamaril, of the Bureau of PlantIndustry, told a national daily

that in India, malunggay is used in treating variousailments. A 2001 study in India has

found that the fresh root of the young tree can beused to treat fever. Asthmatics are

advised to drink the infusion from the roots of the plant.

Related Studies

The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and vitamin A deficiency (VAD)

remain at a significant public health level in the Philippines as shown by National

Nutrition Surveys conducted by the FNRI-DOST. While riboflavin and folic acid

deficiencies among schoolchildren could also be areas of concern, nutritional

assessment of these vitamins are lacking. In this study, Moringa oleifera, locally known

as Malunggay, was considered as a possible solution to these problems because of its

high nutritional content. The study was conducted in two public elementary schools in

Muntinlupa City where 121 underweight children aged 8-10 years old were divided into

control (n=60) and experimental (n=61) groups. The control group was fed with snack
foods (arrozcaldo, ginataang mais, macaroni soup, pancit canton and polvoron) during

recess while the experimental group was fed with the same snack foods wherein three

grams Malunggay leaf powder (MLP) was added. Height and weight, food intake and

hemoglobin, serum ferritin, vitamin A, riboflavin and folic acid were measured before

and after the 120-day feeding period. Results showed that the consumption of the snack

foods significantly increased the nutrient intakes of the children. Greatest increase was

recorded for vitamin A intake of the children given 3 g MLP. Endline vitamin A intake

exceeded the requirement for vitamin A. Increase in height and weight between the

groups were not different. Increase in hemoglobin levels was greater among children

who consumed snack foods with MLP while increase in serum vitamin A levels was

observed in both groups. A significant increase in serum folic acid was recorded in the

experimental group. In conclusion, regular consumption of Malunggay leaves may help

alleviate certain micronutrient deficiencies such as IDA, VAD and folic acid deficiency.

(Perlas, 2017)

The study of (Perlas 2017) iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and vitamin A deficiency

(VAD) is a significant public health level in the Philippines. In this study, moringa

oleifera, locally known as malunggay was considered as a possible solution to these

problems because of its high nutritional content, researchers also studying the taste or

acceptability of the respondent to the malunggay lollipop to be sold. The researchers

are not into the benefits of malunggay lollipop but into the profit of it.

The Feasibility of Malunggay (Moringa oleifera) as Cleaning AgentAbstractThe

purpose of this study is to investigate malunggay leaves as cleaning agent. The

malunggay leaves wre separated from the stalk, pounde using the mortar and pestle

until the extract comes out. The pounded malunggay leaves wre mixed with baking
soda and then water. The purpose of baking soda is to increase the effectivity of the

product. The product was then placed in a container. Using the sponge, apply the

mixture on stained areas (kitchen sink, refrigerator wall and tile wall). After applying the

mixtureon stained areas, rinse immediately.Observation was then done. (Rosales, 2018)

Moringa oleifera is a plant found in many tropical and subtropical countries. Many

different uses and properties have been attributed to this plant, mainly as a nutritional

supplement and as a water purifier. Its antibacterial activity against different pathogens

has been described in different in vitro settings. However the potential effect of this plant

leaf as a hand washing product has never been studied. The aim of this study is to test

the efficacy of this product using an in vivo design with healthy volunteers. (Torondel,

2014)

The main objective of this study is to determine the profitability and valuability of

“Moringa Pancake” by analyzing the different aspects such as product, service industry,
market industry, technical, financial and organizational and management aspects.

According to customer analysis, majority of the participants are female. Most of the

participants are between 14-16 years old. The 92.7 % of the participants like to eat

pancakes and 78.2 % of the respondents are like to eat malunggay but majority of the

participants want kalabasa and they prefer sweetener is condensed milk. The 74.5 % of

the participants said that the price is affordable. And the packaging rated by the

participants 5 which means packaging is attractable. According to competitors analysis

the researcher has two competitors. Michelle breakfast eatery and Marian sari- sari

store and eatery. In the place and promotion analysis the place is accessible according

to 94.5% of the participants because in their areas don’t have a selling of pancake.

Recommendation This study resulted into a healthy food that contains vitamin like

protein which is good for body building and repair of tissues, plus vitamin A which is

good for the skin and heat. The financial capability of the entrepreneurs should also be

considered because the success and failure of any business not only defend on the

knowledge and ability of the person who will operate the business also on the

availability of fund. The researchers recommend to expanding on improving or creating

other vegetables to can mix into pancake or other snacks, and to encourage other

people doesn’t like eating malunggay. Furthermore, additional readings and more

information about the study is highly appreciated. (Blanco, Daria, De leon, Marinay,

Basa, Katarining, Corpuz, DelaCruz, Gallos, 2017)

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the Research Design, Setting of the Study, Subject of the

study, Procedure of the study, Sources of data, and the Statistical Treatment.

Research Design

The descriptive method of research was used in the study. According to Dr.Y.P

Aggarwal (2008) Descriptive research is devoted to the gathering of information about

prevailing conditions or situations for the purpose of description and interpretation. This

type of research method is not simply amassing and tabulating facts but includes proper

analysis, interpretation, comparisons, identification of trends and relationships.

The term descriptive research has often been used incorrectly to describe three

types of investigation that are different. Perhaps their superficial similarities have

obscured their differences. Each of them employs the process of disciplined inquiry

through the gathering and analysis of empirical data and each attempts to develop

knowledge. (Best and Khan, 2007) Since the present study is focused on analyzation of

the profit that will be gained by selling the Malunggay Lollipop, the descriptive method of

research is the most appropriate to use.

Setting of the Study

The setting of the study entitled profit analysis of Malunggay Lollipop and its

Acceptability will be conducted at GSIS Avenue, Cogeo Village Brgy. Bagong Nayon 1

Antipolo City. The researchers will sell the Malunggay Lollipop to the students of

Bagong Nayon 1 Elementary School to know the profit of the Malunggay Lollipop that

will be analysed throughout the study.

Subject of the Study

The researchers will sell the products to the students in Bagong Nayon 1

Elementary School who is willing to buy the product therefore all those who are willing

to buy the product Malunggay Lollipop will be the respondents.

The sampling technique that the researchers will use is accidental sampling

where in it is know as “the man on the street” interview conducted frequently to get

public opinion and the researchers will be able to get the opinion of the respondents

about the malunggay lollipop by using accidental sampling.

Procedure of the Study

The researchers will make a product which is the Malunggay Lollipop. The first

step that the rsearchers will do to gather the datathat is needed to know the

acceptability of the respondents to the Mlunggay Lollipop is to craft fist all the possible

questions that will be asked to the respondents. Second is to edit all the questions that

is gathered. This include checking the language used and if the question is appropriate

to askto the respodents. Third, finalized the question. Fourth, the researchers will make

a letter that will be submitted to the teacher for researchers to be able to sell and to

conduct an interview. After doing procedures one to four the researchers will now

proceed in making the Malunggay Lollipop.

In making the Malunggay Lollipop, the researchers will buy first the ingredients

and materials that is going to be used the ingredients will be sugar, malunggay,

consentrated vanilla, and lollipop stick. The researchers will also use cxandy wrapper

for the presentation. Once the materials and ingredients is prepared, the researchers

will start making the malunggay lollipop. First, melt the sugar in a pot until it is boiled

and while waiting for the sugar to melt start blending the malunggay leaves. Ehen the

sugar melted mix the blended malunggay leaves. In presentation, use a pattern to mold

the lollipop and then put the melted sugar malunggay leaves in the pattern and wait until

it is dry.
The researchers will use survey questionnaire to knoe the acceptability of the

respondnet to the malunggay lollipop. The respondent would be those people who is

willing to buy the malunggay lollipop around the vacinity of Bagong Nayon 1, Antipolo

City. To anlayse the data, the researchers will use statistical treatment of data analysis

such as wighted mean. And t-test.

Sources of Data

The study covers the profit of selling the Malunggay Lollipop including the step in

making of the product and taste of the respondents.

The respondents involve in this study are the people in Bagong Nayon 1 who

are willing to buy the product. The researchers will know the profit of Malunggay

Lollipop by selling it. The researchers will use questionnaire that can help them in

conducting survey to know the acceptability of the respondents in the product

Malunggay Lollipop.
CHAPTER 4
This chapter presents the presentation and analysis of data and the interpretation of the
table.
Table 1

2 2 87 72 174 102
3 2 123 88 246 158
4 2 103 117 206 89

The table 1 shows the days of selling Malunggay Lollipop, the price per unit, the
pieces that was made, the sales in selling the Malunggay Lollipop and the profit gained
in every sales.
As seen in the table the researchers gain the highest profit in the third day of
selling Malunggay Lollipop. The researchers invested 88 pesos and are able to make
123 pieces of Malunggay lollipop that is sold by 2 pesos each. The total sales was 246
pesos and the profit gained was 158 pesos. Therefore selling Malunggay Lollipop is
profitable because there is a return of expenses and there is a profit in every selling of
Malunggay Lollipop.
According to the study of (Blanco, Daria, De leon, Marinay, Basa, Katarining,
Corpuz, DelaCruz, Gallos, 2017) profitability and valuability of “Moringa Pancake” The
financial capability of the entrepreneurs should also be considered because the success
and failure of any business not only defend on the knowledge and ability of the person
who will operate the business also on the availability of fund. This implies that the
Malunggay Lollipop is affordable and profitable for the respondents.
Table 2

The table 3 shows the acceptability of Malunggay Lollipop as perceived by the

respondents. In first four rows it shows that the taste is acceptable since it has the
highest weighted meanthat falls on strongly agree, next is that the malunggay is tasted
on the product that also falls into strongly agree and the taste is satisfying that falls into
moderately agree meaning some is satisfied some said it is just fair.
Next is the presentation of the product malunggay lollipop according to the
respondents the malunggay lollipop looks presentable, it is presented well and it is
stylish because of its packaging. The overall highest weighted mean of the presentation
falls into strongly agree.
The next acceptability as perceived by the respondents is the price most of the
respondents agree that the malunggay lollipop is affordable which has 4.55 highest
weighted mean that falls into strongly agree. Only few says that it is pricy.
The last acceptability is the size, most of the respondents agree that the size is
satisfying since it got the highest weighted mean that falls into moderately agree. Some
said it is too big some also agree that is it too small.

This implies that according to (Pure Moringa by Baterna Farms, 2018)

Malunggay contains three times the potassium in bananas, four times the vitamin A in
carrots, seven times the vitamin C in oranges and 2 times the calcium in a glass of milk.
Available Form of Malunggay Leaves: fresh leaves or vegetables, powder or
supplement form, and tea. Malunggay can also be mixed with bread, oil for cooking, and
ice cream etc. Wherein the product Malunggay Lollipop is healthy because of the
nutrients found in Malunggay. Malunggay Lollipop can make a better healthy candy for
everyone. And it is affordable and profitable.

As seen in the table, at 5% level of significance and 2 degree of freedom, the

critical t-values are -3.182 and 3.182, and the computed t-value is 4.85. Since the

computed t-value of 4.85 is higher than the critical values of - 3.182 and 3.182, the

decision is, “Reject the null hypothesis and Accept the alternative hypothesis.” Thus,

there is a significant relationship between the acceptability level of the respondents and

the profit that is gained by selling Malunggay Lollipop.

This implies that when the malunggay lollipop is rejected by the respondents there

will be no profit in selling maluggay lollipop but when it is accepted by the respondents it

will gain profit.

Chapter 5
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This chapter presents the summary, conclusion, and recommendations of the
researchers.
Summary of findings
