Metacognition: - Person Variables - Task Variables

Metacognition is thinking about one's own thinking and learning processes. It involves three types of metacognitive knowledge: person variables which are how one views themselves as a learner; task variables which is understanding the nature of the task; and strategy variables which is awareness of the strategies used to learn and evaluating their effectiveness. Metacognition also includes meta-attention which is focusing attention on strategies, and metamemory which is awareness of effective memory strategies.

Metacognition- “thinking about

thinking” or “learning how to learn”


-is a higher order of thinking that
enables understanding, analysis and
control of your cognitive processes.

Metacognitive knowledge-
understanding what you know about
yourself as cognitive processor.
Metacognitive knowledge can be
divided into three categories:
1. Person Variables-includes how one
views himself as a learner and thinker.
2. Task Variables-includes knowledge
about the nature of the task.
3. Strategy Variable-involves awareness
of the strategy you are using to learn a
topic and evaluating whether this
strategy is effective.
Meta-attention- is the awareness of
specific strategies so that you can keep
your attention focused on the topic or
task at hand.
Metamemory-is your awareness of
memory strategies that work best for
you.
