Observation Lesson

We are learning to use the "stretchy snake" decoding strategy to improve reading accuracy. The lesson involves a puppet making mistakes reading aloud to demonstrate errors, having students correct the puppet and use counters to sound out each letter of incorrect words. This is followed by independent reading practice. The goal is to help students sound out words properly using the new stretching technique.

Text: Pig the Fibber by Aaron Blabey

 Students form a circle and collect 6 counters each.

 Reread the text with the students.
 On one or two pages, get the puppet to read. The puppet makes mistakes that don’t sound right or make
sense (select errors that are similar to those students make). The students have to tell the puppet to stop,
explain what it did wrong and give it tips to fix the mistake.
 Use the counters to sound out each sound in the word that the puppet says incorrectly.
 The puppet re-reads the text after the feedback has been given.
