PRE-USE INSPECTION – RIGGING EQUIPMENT / ASME B30.

Note: this is a general inspection; each manufacturer may have different inspection criteria, always check specific
manufacturer's criteria.
WIRE ROPE SLINGS; Wire Rope Slings shall be removed from service if;
 Missing or illegible sling identification.
 Broken Wires: Running wire rope, 6 randomly distributed broken wires in one rope lay. Strand-laid; 10 broken wires
in one strand in one rope lay.
 Severe corrosion, localized abrasion or scraping of the rope, attachments or fittings.
 Evidence of Kinking, crushing, bird caging or any other damage resulting in damage to the rope structure.
 Evidence of heat damage.
 End attachments that are cracked, deformed, or worn to the extent that the strength of the sling is substantially
affected.
 Any other condition that may cause the operator/user any doubt.

SYNTHETIC WEB SLINGS & POLYESTER ROUND SLING; Synthetic Web Slings shall be removed from service if:
 Missing or illegible sling identification.
 Acid Damage, caustic burns, melting or charring of any part of the sling.
 Broken or worn stitching, excessive abrasion, holes, tears, cuts, or snags.
 Knots in any part of the sling, or evidence of knots.
 Discoloration, brittle or stiff areas of the sling, may mean chemical or ultraviolet/sunlight damage.
 Fittings, those are pitted, corroded, cracked, bent, twisted, gouged, or broken.
 Any other condition that may cause the operator/user any doubt.

ALLOY STEEL CHAIN SLINGS; Alloy Steel Chain Slings shall be removed from service if:
 Missing or illegible sling identification.
 Excessive nicks, cracks, breaks, or gouges.
 Stretched, bent, twisted, or deformation of chain link or components
 Evidence of heat damage.
 Excessive pitting or corrosion.
 Lack of ability of chain or components to hinge (articulate) freely.
 Weld splatter.
 Any other condition that may cause the operator/user any doubt.

RIGGINGHARDWARE: HOOKS, SHACKLES, TURNBUCKLES, COME-A-LONGS, ETC.


 Missing or illegible manufacturer’s name or trademark and/or rated load identification (or size as required)
 A 10% or more reduction of the original dimension
 Bent, twisted, distorted, stretched, elongated, cracked or broken load bearing components
 Excessive nicks, gouges, pitting and corrosion
 Indications of heat damage including weld spatter or arc strikes, evidence of unauthorized welding
 Loose or missing nuts, bolts, cotter pins, snap rings, or other fasteners and retaining devices
 Unauthorized replacement components or other visible conditions that cause doubt as to the continued use of the
sling.

if any of the above conditions are noted the equipment must be removed from service. notify the immediate
supervisor to determine if equipment is safe for use and ok to return to service. a qualified inspector must make
documented inspections at least annually, having records maintained by the supervisor.
