"ILLINOIS" SINGLE-BITTED KEY LOCKS
‘Types of Mechoniam. The ‘'G” type mechan-
sm (illustrated in figure 1) with the No, 260
key employs five tumblers ond connet be
mosterkeyed. It is
Curity requirements and when the omount of
ited. This mechanism is used in
ies locks, and is perticulorly
ble for light uses indoors,
limited security and quickly
The type mechenism (illustrated in
figure 2) also has five tumblers but is de-
signed to provide accurate key positioning
necessary for successful mesterkeying of
flat-tumbler lock s, end for use in sitvations
demanding long-wearing quelities as needed
in builders’ hardwore locks. This is ac-
‘complished by the use of spring-tempered
bross key guide inserts. The No. 360 key is
used, and also provides quickly avcilable
key service. All locks of the 7000-series
employ this mechanism.
Principles of Operation. Both the “‘G" type
mechanism (No. 260 key) ond the ““F'" type
mechanism (No. 360 key) have tumblers
which ore forced against the serrature of the
key by independent springs. They are or-
ranged so thet when the tumbler and key
depth numbers ore matched in each tumbler
jon with the key inserted, the tumbler
fends are in alignment with the plug per
ery. When the key is withdrawn the tumblers
fe forced by the springs out of alignment
and into @ splined recess provided in the
barrel or stationary member of the locking
cylinder, thus preventing the tuming of the
plug essembly without the use of th
blies. Standard 3000-and 7000-series cabinet
ing either the “'G" type (No. 260
(No, 360 key) mechanism,
ore usually made with o “retainer tumbler’
(No. 3060--illystrated), ond a hole is pro-
ded in the cylinder barrel for the insertion
for forcing thi
cylinder borrel recess, and allowing the plug
assembly to be easily removed for service
or replacement. Assembly of the plug as-
sembly into the cylinder barrel is eo:
complished by compressing the
tumbler ond pushing the plug assembly into
the cylinder barre! until the retainer tumbler
mechanism (No. 260 key) requis
ferent kinds of tumblers (as illustrated),
‘one for each of the four depths provided on
the key. Example for Setting-Up a Combino-
tion: The combination number (depth numbers)
of the illustrated No. 260 key is 42312 (num-
ber starts from of the key). The cor
responding tumbler number key
ore 3059Q (depth No. 4),
2), 3059L (depth No. 3), 3059A (depth N
ond 3059F (depth No. 2). See Ports List
Kit Ne. X12,
rs for Keying Alike,
ns, Masterkeying. Type
jsm (No. 360 key) re-
quires four different kinds of tumblers, one
for each of the four depths (Nos. 3059A,
3059F, 3059L, 3059Q,) for non-masterkey es
combinations. For mesterkeyed combinations
eight tumblers (illustrated) ore needed to
provide all combinations. Example for Set-
ting-Up a Combination: The combination
umber (depth numbers) of the illustrated
primary key is 42312 (number starts from
point of the key). Assume thet the master
combination number (depth numbers) is
42424, The corresponding tumbler depth
numbers to fit the mechanism assembled to
fit the example keys are then 4-4, 2-2, 3-4,
1.2, 2-4, of tumbler numbers 30599, 3059F,
3059M, 3059B, 3059H. All type “'F” mech:
anisms have number 3052 guides between
the tumblers. See Parts List--Kit Ne. X12.
Some plug assemblies have the tumblers
held in place by staking the metol cbove
the spring hole. Disassembly can easily be
accomplished by lightly topping the tumbler
to be removed on the end opposite the spring
hole openings. This staking is to prevent
disassembly of the tumblers when handling
plug essembly prior to assembly into lock& &

Key Duplicating. Duplicotion of ILLINOIS
SINGLE-BITTED keys is accomplished by
the some generally accepted procedure os
thot used for oll pin-ond dise-tumbler lock
keys, and con be easily accomplished with
any make of standord duplicating machine,
by following instructions furnished with the
machine.
Moking Single-Bitted Illinois Keys from
Code. Determine the combination "depth
numbers" to be made by reference to the
KEY CODES in this manual. The combino-
tion number (example 42312 illustrated
figures 1 end 2) storts from the end of the
obese sy
key. To make this key, place the No. 260
‘or 360 key blank in the dupliceting machine,
gouging from the shoulder and straight back
of the key os per the machine instructions.
Place “depth key” number 4 (See Parts
List-Kit No. X14) in the cut key position
in machine, toking core to see that the
gouging is accurate. Cut number 4 depth on
the blank 10 the wiath on the depth key-
Then replace with number 2 depth key ond
cut number 2 depth on the blank in the sec-
‘ond position from the key point, and cut to
the same width as that on the depth key.
Continue the some process with depth num-
bers 3-1-2 depth keys to complete all depth
cuts. Join the depth cuts, toking core to
maintain the full depth cut surface.*ILLINOIS" DOUBLE -BITTED KEY LOCKS
1, Types of Mechonism. The "“C"" type mech- 3.
anism (illustrated figure 3) uses No. 110,
210, and 210M keys, ond is constructed
entirely of brass. Eight tumblers orronged
in sets of two ore used together with thee
brass key guides to provide accurate key
positioning ond long wear. This mechanism
is used with all 1000-series locks, ond is
particularly suitable for outdoor hard use,
with good security, ond key service practic-
ally restricted to locksmiths.
The ‘“O' type mechanism (illustrated
figure 3) uses No. 110, 210, 220, 210M, ond
310 keys, ond has o non-ferrous alloy die-
cost plug body ond key guides. Eight tum-
blers arranged in sets of two ore used. This
mechanism is used with all 5000-series
locks, ond is porticulerly suitable for in-
door or outdoor light use with low cost, good
security, ond key service practically re-
stricted to locksmiths.
The “E" mechanism uses No. 105 ond
115 keys, and has @ non-ferrous olloy die-
cast plug body and key guides. Fight tum-
blers arranged in sets of two ore used. T!
mechanism is used with all 4000-series
locks, and is particularly suitable for out-
door light use with limited security, ond key
service practically restricted to locksmiths.
Particularly suitable for screw-style locks
for vending machines with good security.
Principles of Operation. The “C'" “D" ond
E" type mechanisms have tumblers ar-
ronged in pairs, one pair for each depth
position on the key. The keys hove co-
Ordinoted cuts (serrotures) on two sides.
The key passes through o suitably placed
hole in the tumblers with © working cleor-
‘once only, thus providing positively operated
tumblers which are mechanically positioned
without the aid of springs. Each poir of
tumblers for types ‘*C'" ond ““D”” have one
spring to throw the tumblers in opposing
directions ond into opposing splined re-
cesses in the barrel of the lock cylinder
when the key is withdrawn. The type "E
tumblers ore arranged te spring in one di-
rection only. Insertion of the proper key
Gligns the tumblers with the periphery of
the plug, thus ollowing the key and plug
assembly to be turned.
Installation and Removal of Plog Assem
blies. Many of the stondord cobinet locks
(series 1000, 2000, 5000, 6000) ore made
‘on oval-shaped spring wire ring to hold
the plug assembly into the cylinder barrel.
Although this construction is not designed
for disossembly, the plug assembly con be
removed from the cylinder barrel. Provide @
block (preferably of wood, to prevent mar-
ting) with a hole approximately 11/16" in
diometer; ploce the face of the lock cylinder
fon the block ond over the hole, Strike the
back end of the plug ossembly with o sharp
blow and the plug essembly will be eject
from the borrel. Some marring of the barrel
Finish will result, however, the burr con be
tapped back into place with little damage to
the finish. Re-ossembly will be obvious, but
it is suggested thot @ new ring be used
(assembly rings furnished with Kit No. X13).
bly of Tumblers (Type "CD" ond
“E"") for Keying Alike, Changing Combino-
tion, Not Masterkeyed. The tumblers for the
"CH ond "OD" types are arranged in pairs,
fone pair for each depth position on the key.
Each poir of tumblers consists of one
gvlac”” tumbler of a given depth number and
one “fopposite’” tumbler of the some depth
number. It will be noted from the tumbler
illustrations Figure 3 thet for each “regular”
tunbler for a given depth number there is on
“opposite” tumbler with some depth number
but, being reversed end for end, to pro
the spring arrangement illustroted. Exemple
for Setting-Up @ Combination: Combination
number (depth numbers) 1-2-3-4 illustrated
(number storts from point of the key). The
corresponding tumbler numbers for the first
position would be 3015A ond 30150, peired
for depth No. 1, essembled in the plug in
the some relative position illustrated. Tum-
ler numbers 30158 and 3015C ore poired
for depth No. 2, assembled in the plug in
the some relotive position illustrated. Tum-
bler numbers 30158 ond 3015C are poired
for depth No. 3, essembled in the plug in
the opposite (end for end) relotive position
illustrated. Tumbler numbers 3015A ond
30150 ore paired for depth No. 4, assembled
in the plug in the opposite (end for end)
telative position illustrated. In each pairof tumblers, the “'regulor’” is placed closest
to the head (bom) of the key and the “op.
posite” forthest from it. This is necessary
to get the spring arrangement in the proper
direction. It should be noted that when
facing the front of the plug, all springs ore
to be on the side opposite to the key em-
bossing.
The guide No. 3012A is used in all 1000-
series locks, which are all brass.
Type ““E" mechanisms have two tumblers
alike making @ pair for each depth position
fon the key. Four tumblers, one for each
depth position ore provided; numbers 3010A
(depth No. 1), 3010B (depth No. 2), 3010C
(depth No. 3), 30100 (depth No: 4).
In the type "E" mechanisms, the tum-
ler spring throws each pair of tumblers in
fone direction, therefore the “‘opposite””
tumbler ond the reversing of tumblers end
Fig.
sntioned above for the type
mechonisms, is not neces-
sory here.
Example for Setting-Up o Combination:
Suppose the combination number (depth
numbers) wos 1-2-3-4. The corresponding
tunibler arrangement then would be two No.
3010A tumblers for depth No. 1, two No.
30108 for depth No. 2, two No. 3010C for
depth No. 3, and two No. 30100 for depth
No. 4.
Assembly of Tumblers (Ty
“'D"), Mastetkeyed. The principl
‘and key design for masterkeyed
double bitted key locks 1s identi
of locks not masterkeyed, described above,
except thot two positions are provided in
each tumbler, one for the primary key, ond
cone for the master key. An example for
‘as follows: As-
sume the primary key combination number
(depth numbers) is 1 llustrated figure
4), and the master key combination number
(depth numbers) is 1-2-1-3 (illustrated in Fig
4) The depth numbers required for the first
position ore 1-1, the second 2-2, the third
3-1, ond the fourth 4-3. The required pair
tumblers for the first position (1-1) is th
fore 3017A (regular) and 3017M (opposite);
for the second position (2-2), S0I7E (reg-
vler) ond 3017H (opposite); for the third
position (3-1), 3017F (ceguler) and 3017G
(opposite); for the fourth position (4-3),
3017A (regular) and 3017M (opposite). So as

not to lose the proper spring direction of the
tumblers, the masterkeyed plugs should be
filled to the primary key. The method of
