INTRODUCTION
Cancer refers to any one of a large number of diseases characterized by the
development of abnormal cells that divide uncontrollably and have the ability to infiltrate
and destroy normal body tissue. Cancer often has the ability to spread throughout your
body.
My Sister’s Keeper is a movie that is released last 2009 by director Nick
Cassavetes starring Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vassilieva, Jason Patric, and
Alec Baldwin. It was based from the book of Jodi Picoult's 2004 novel of the same name.
It is a story about Anna Fritzgerald a 13 year old girl who sues her parents for using her
as spare parts for her sister who is dying from cancer.
ANALYSIS AND REACTION
When we love a person, we wanted things that are best for them, we wanted
them to enjoy and be happy with life. We wanted them to experience our love and
warmth for them. We wanted to give the best version of ourselves for them. But we
often tend to forget that what we want may not be what they wanted. The movie “My
Sister’s Keeper” is all about a Mother’s love, sister’s bravery, Cancer and Family. It
revolves around how cancer can not only kill a person but how it can destroy a family if
they choose to.
The movie made me realized that it’s not only the patient that is suffering from
cancer is the only that is in pain. I have seen that her mother, siblings and father are
also in great pain when they see that their daughter is in agony due to cancer. In the
first part of the movie I saw how the disease transformed their family from being free
and happy to being restricted and gloomy.
Seeing how Anna reacts on the circumstances where her sister has gone into
renal failure I was caught between feeling angry at the same time pity for her. Angry
because she is selfish for not helping her sister but pity for knowing that she is only
made and born to help her sister live, at a young age she already donated blood and
stems cells for her. But as the movie continues I understood why she had to do what
she did. It was for her sister all along. Her sister wanted to end her pain and suffering of
her family. She wanted her family continue living and not be caught in the nets of her
diseases. She wanted them to be free. This movie opened my eyes to reality of how
cancer can really affect a family especially on the emotional and mental state. I
developed a deeper sense of empathy to cancer patients and I also the amazement for
the health care team on helping the family cope with their problem. At the end, just like
how Kate wanted, things became good for the family.
If I were the Nurse of the Patient that is affected my Nursing Management would be as
follow:
ASSESSMENT:
Subjective:
The Patient Verbalized “I’m sick, I’m Tired and I’m Ugly”, “Don’t You Dare tell me I’m
Beautiful because I’m not. “I’m a Freak”
Objective:
-Hair loss
-Pale and dry skin
-Sunken Eyes
-anorexia
NURSING DIAGNOSIS:
Situational low self-esteem related to chemotherapy side effects.
PLANNING
After the nursing intervention the client will be able to Begin to develop coping
mechanisms to deal effectively with problems.
INTERVENTION AND CORE COMPETENCY
- Discuss with patient and SO how the diagnosis and treatment are affecting the
patient’s personal life, home and work activities. R: Aids in defining concerns to
begin problem-solving process.
- Review anticipated side effects associated with a particular treatment, including
possible effects on sexual activity and sense of attractiveness and desirability
(alopecia, disfiguring surgery). Tell patient that not all side effects occur, and
others may be minimized or controlled . R: Anticipatory guidance can help patient
and SO begin the process of adaptation to new state and to prepare for some
side effects (buy a wig before radiation, schedule time off from work as
indicated).
- Encourage discussion of concerns about effects of cancer and treatments on role
as homemaker, wage earner, parent, and so forth . R: May help reduce problems
that interfere with acceptance of treatment or stimulate progression of disease.
- Acknowledge difficulties patient may be experiencing. Give information that
counseling is often necessary and important in the adaptation process. R:
Validates reality of patient’s feelings and gives permission to take whatever
measures are necessary to cope with what is happening.
NURSING THEORY
Sister Callista Roy: Adaptation model sees the person as "a biopsychosocial
being in constant interaction with a changing environment". Roy's goal for nursing is
"the promotion of adaptation in each of the four modes, thereby contributing to the
person's health, quality of life and dying with dignity".
VINCENTIAN CORE VALUES

EVALUATION
- Goal met. At the end of the day the patient was able to develop a coping
mechanism in dealing with self-esteem problems.
