Child Behavior Observations

Adelae was building a block tower that fell over twice. When her second tower fell, she kicked the blocks and knocked over another child's larger tower. When the teacher approached, Adelae cried and said "no" when offered help rebuilding. While Adelae is showing more patience rebuilding towers, her responses to frustration were more immature than expected for a 5-year-old. The teacher needs to help Adelae learn ways to cope with common frustrations.

Child’ name: Adelae Date: 2/12/2012

Setting: Block center in a childcare center: child initiated activity.

Incident: Adelae was building a block tower. When the seven-block tower fell, she tried again. This
time, she succeeded in getting only six blocks stacked before they fell. She kicked her blocks and
walked over to Darius’ nine- block tower and knocked it over. When the teacher approached, she
cried and shouted “no” when the teacher offered to help her rebuild her tower. ( Darius left the center
after his tower was knocked over.)

Comments: Adelae is showing more patience by rebuilding – a patience not seen last month.
However, her crying and destructive responses are not as mature as they should be for a 5 year old.
She needs to be shown ways to cope with common frustrations.
