Method Statement for Installation of Rock Bolt
6. METHODOLOGY:
Rock bolts generally consist of plain/Tor steel rods with a faceplate and nut at the rock surface
with the space between the bolt and the rock filled with cement sand or resin grout.
Tensioning is not possible and the load in the bolt is generated by movements in the rock mass.
In order to be effective, rock bolts have to be installed before significant movement in the rock
mass has taken place.
6.1. Material Specification
Bolt strength :Deformed rebar (HYSD/TMT) of grade Fe500 MPa for surface support
as per design
Bolt lengths :3-5 m or as per design
Bolt dimensions : 25 mm bars
End Anchorage :Washer (MS), 200 x 200 mm Plate, thickness 6mm~10 mm with nut
Cement/Resin grout :Cement & Resin Capsules 32mm/40mm dia. and 300mm long
manufactured by M/s Buildtech Products India Pvt. Ltd., Haridwar
And/Or Cement grout with W/C ratio between 0.3-0.35
6.2. Drilling
Drilling for rock bolts shall be performed using Wagon drilling machine/ ROC Drilling rig. The
diameter of the holes shall be generally 15-25 mm more than the rock bolt. Length of the Rock
bolt shall be around 5m and may vary based on type of rock. Spacing of bolts shall be 1300mm
c/c as per drawing.
6.3. Grouting & Installation
Clean the surface around the proposed bolt area by jet nozzle.
A hole of 48-51mm diameter shall be drilled at 100-150 with horizontal or at an angle specified
in the drawing. A wagon drilling machine/ ROC Drilling Rig shall be deployed for this
purpose.
After reaching the specified length in the rock, the drilled hole shall be cleaned thoroughly by
air/ water through a 25mm rigid PVC / steel pipe lowered up to bottom of the hole.
Cement & resin capsule in ration 1:1 shall be pushed into the hole to the end.
A 25mm dia. rock bolt threaded at the top shall be inserted into the hole manually/ drilling rig.
The entire system shall be free from disturbances for at least 24 hours to ensure setting of
the grout.
Rock bolts shall be spaced in a grid pattern as decided by the design consultants.

Method Statement for Installation of Rock Bolt
Arrangement of wire mesh required over shotcreting shall be done at this stage immediately.
Face plate of size 200 x 200mm and 6-12 mm thick or as approved by the design
consultants shall be inserted into protruding bolt, with nut weakly tightened. (Full tightening
shall be done only after setting of the grout).
6.4. Test of Rock bolts
Pull-out tests shall be performed to verify the load carrying capacity of installed rock bolts. The
rock bolts shall be tested up to 110% of their design load in accordance with IS: 11309 -1985.
Quality assurance testing of rock bolts shall be 20% of rock bolts installed initially upto 20nos. at
different locations and reduce to 2 % of the rock bolt installed after satisfactory test . Initial tests
prior to major rock cut slope excavation will help in confirming the design assumptions/
procedures and if required may be revised.
A centre hole jack shall be installed on the rock bolt end. The test shall be performed in
accordance with IS 11309, up to the test load for the respective type of support and steel type.
7. SAFETY
Risk Assessment report attached as attachment 3 shall be used.
Workers will wear helmets, Safety shoes/ Gum boots while working on site.
Watchman will be available at each work site both during working and non-working hours.
All excess excavated material, concrete, etc. will be cleared regularly.
8. QUALITY
Inspection Test Plan attached as appendix 4 shall be used.
9. EQUIPMENTS
List of Equipment attached as attachment 6 shall be used
