About SUSI grants
SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland) is Ireland’s single
national awarding authority for all higher and further
education grants.
SUSI offers support to all types of students, from school
leavers to mature students returning to education.
We award grants for the following:
Further Education - (PLC Courses)
Maintenance Grant
Higher Education - (Undergraduate courses)
Fees (field trip element and tuition),
Student Contribution
Maintenance Grant
Students Studying outside the State (Undergraduate)
Maintenance Grant
Postgraduate Education (In Ireland only)
Contribution towards Fees
(Special Rate) Maintenance Grant.
Am I eligible for a grant?
To be eligible for a grant, students must meet all of the
following criteria:
Nationality and Residency:
· You must be an Irish, EU, EEA or Swiss National or have
specific leave to remain in the State as granted by the
DJE (Department of Justice and Equality)
· You must also be ordinarily resident in Ireland, the EU,
EEA or Switzerland for 3 of the last 5 years
Course:
· You must be progressing in your education (increasing
your NFQ (National Framework of Qualifications) level
· You must be attending an approved course in an
approved institution
Income:
· Your reckonable income (calculated for grant purposes)
must fall under specific thresholds
· This income will be a factor in determining what type of
funding you could receive
· Applications are assessed with regard to gross
household income from the previous year

Before you apply
Before applying for a grant it’s important to know what
class of applicant you are as this determines whose
income we take into account when assessing your
application.
You can be one of two categories;
1. Dependent (Income of applicant plus Parent(s) /
Legal Guardian(s) taken into account). Within that
you can be:
Dependent
• Under 23 on 1 January of the year of your first point
of entry into further or higher education
Mature Dependent
• Over 23 on 1 January of the year of your first point
of entry into further or higher education and residing
with your parents.
2. Independent (Income of applicant plus Spouse, Civil
Partner or Co-Habitant taken into account)
• 23 years of age or over on Jan 1st of the year when
you first enter/re-enter further or higher education.
• You must have been living independently from your
parents/legal guardians from the October in the year
prior to your first point of entry/re-entry into further
or higher education and will be required to provide
evidence of this.
How do I apply?
All applications for Student Grant funding are made
online at www.susi.ie
Step 1
Make your application
Please ensure that you provide complete and
accurate information (dates of birth and PPS
numbers in particular). You need to apply to
SUSI each year to renew your application.
Step 2
Supply supporting documents
Based on information provided when applying
you will receive either an award or refusal letter or
a letter requesting supporting documentation to
allow us further process your application.
Step 3
Receive Decision or
You will be advised of your grant decision by post.
Your application will be:
A) Awarded or B) Refused
Step 4
If awarded in order to receive payment you need
to have:
• Received a grant award or grant renewal award
letter from SUSI;
• Registered with your college for the new
academic year;
• Been confirmed by your college to SUSI as
registered/attending for the new academic year;
and
• Submitted your bank details through your
SUSI online account.
