Buoyancy V1

This document contains an assignment sheet for an Advanced Placement Physics 2 worksheet on fluid mechanics and buoyancy. The assignment sheet lists 6 free response questions about buoyant forces, densities of objects in water, how deep a barge will sit in saltwater vs freshwater, the maximum mass that can hang from a Styrofoam sphere, tension in a string attached to an object in water, and how many helium balloons would be needed to lift a person. There are blanks provided for the student to show their work and write their answers.

Advanced Placement – Physics 2

Worksheet on Fluid Mechanics - Buoyancy Concept

Free – Response: Answer the following Questions. Show all the necessary work for
you to be able to get full points.

1. Objects A, B, and C in the figure on the right have the same

volume. Rank in order, from largest to smallest, the sizes of
the buoyant forces FA, FB, and FC on A, B, and C. Explain.

2. Rank in order, from largest to smallest, the densities of objects

A, B, and C in the figure on the right. Explain.

3. A cargo barge is loaded in a saltwater harbor for a trip up a

Freshwater river. If the rectangular barge is 3.0 m by 20.0 m and
sits 0.80 m deep in the harbor, how deep will it sit in the river?

4. Styrofoam has a density of 300 kg/m3. What is the maximum mass that can hang without sinking
from a 50-cm-diameter Styrofoam sphere in water? Assume the volume of the mass is negligible
compared to that of the sphere.

5. What is the tension in the string in the Figure?

6. How many helium-filled balloons would it take to lift a person? Assume the person has a mass of
72 kg and that each helium-filled balloon is spherical with a diameter of 33 cm.
