Medieval China Essay

Directions: ​In this unit we discussed trade, the government system, and the culture of China.
This includes subtopics such as the silk road and maritime trade, meritocracy and the scholar
official class, confucianism, buddhism, advancements in technology such as wood block printing
and paper. You will choose one of prompts listed below and write a 2-3 page paper. The paper
should have an introduction and conclusion and 2-3 body paragraphs. To collect information on
your chosen topic you may use the information you have obtained from previous assignments,
from power point presentations, from the internet, or from the library. I want you to include 5-7
sources in your paper and if you got the information from the internet of a book make sure to cite
your sources. The paper will follow the MLA format. If you need help look at the link under
“Useful Links” sub-page in the Exploring Medieval China site. I will provide you with a rubric
that will help you keep track of the requirements needed to earn a good grade.
Prompts:
1. Compare and contrast the affects of Buddhism and Confusion on Medieval China.
Consider the ways in which religion influenced different parts of Chinese society.
2. How did trade change overtime in Medieval China?
Considered the silk road and maritime trade. How did trade change in either trade
system? Was there a preferred trade system? Did trade goods change overtime?
3. Discuss 2-3 technology advancement made in Medieval China.
China has always been the innovation center of the world. What technological
innovations were created under the Tang, Song, Ming, Mongol dynasties? How did these
innovations impact Chinese society.
Essay outline:
Introduction: ​Your introduction paragraph should include a summary or explanation of your
chosen prompt. Why did you choose to write about it? Include thesis statement. In your thesis tell
the reader what 2-3 main points you will be addressing in your essay. 5-7 sentences.
Body Paragraphs: ​Your body paragraphs are the bulk of your paper. Here is were you will
insert the research you have conducted. Remember use 5-7 sources that will help you support
you claims. In your body paragraphs you will explain and give analysis of the two or three main
points you stated in the introduction.
Conclusion: Wrap up your essay with a conclusion paragraph. Restates your thesis, sum up your
thoughts, and last include a synthesis portion. As part of your synthesis address what the
implications of this topic are on modern china or the world in general.
