Photoshop Assignment 2: Promotional Postcard

For your second Photoshop assignment, you will be creating a promotional postcard using Photoshop tools and techniques
we have learned so far including:
 Create a new document for print
 Add images to the artwork
 Crop images
 Transform images: scale, rotate, …
 Change layer blending mode and opacity
 Add fx
 Create new fill: solid colour or gradient

Design brief
 Create a promotional postcard for Green Travel
 Target market: Male and female 25-35 years old. Professionals with individual income of $50-80K.
College/university graduate. Single or married with no children. High disposable income. Want to explore the
world before they settle down. Enjoy different cultures and food. Travel overseas at least once a year. Demand
value for money, not just cheap prices.
 Marketing objective: to promote the assigned city as the target market’s next travel destination
 Call to action: visit greentravel.ca for ….

Delivery
 Work file: 8.5” x 5.5” (either portrait or landscape is fine) 300dpi in PSD format, RGB mode
 Print file: same measurements, 300dpi in JPG format, CMYK mode

To complete the assignment:


 Download PS Postcard Images.zip and PS Postcard Logo.zip
 Create a new document
o 8.5” x 5.5” (either portrait or landscape is fine)
o Resolution: 300dpi, Colour mode: RGB
 Use the provided photos from SLATE only. Choose at least 4 photos. It could be:
o 1 photo as a background and 3 small photos, or
o Colour background with 1 main photo and 3 small photos
o 2 medium photos and 2 small photos
o Your design, your choice
 Crop, resize and transform photos for the best result
 Apply fx as appropriate. Please note you must convert frame to smart object before you can apply fx to the frame
 Include a headline
 Include a call to action with the website address: greentravel.ca
 Include the company logo. There are 3 versions provided: white, black and colour. Choose the version that is
appropriate to your design
 Make sure you save the file regularly so if there is a problem, you will not lose all your work

To submit the assignment:


 Save your file as PSD. It should be in RGB mode.
 Go to Image: Mode: CMYK and click ‘Flatten’
 Go to File: Save as…to save the new file in JPG format with no compression (maximum quality)
 Upload the PSD (RGB mode) and JPG (CMYK mode) files to Slate

Tips
 Consider design elements, principles and most importantly, design tension
 Choose colours and typography appropriate to target market, marketing objectives and media
 Consider using the tools you have learned so far: brush, gradient and shape
