Thermal Comfort in Architecture

The document discusses James Marston Fitch's book "American Building: The Environmental Forces that Shape It". Fitch argues that architecture's fundamental task is to mediate between humans and the natural environment by reducing environmental stresses on people. Architecture should make life less burdensome by shielding people from environmental pressures. Fitch was an architect and preservationist who helped found Columbia University's architecture school.

James Marston Fitch

American Building: The Environmental Forces that Shape It

“The fundamental thesis of this book is

that the ultimate task of architecture is
to act in
favor of man: to interpose itself between
man and the natural environment in
which he finds himself, in such a way as
to remove the gross environmental load
from his shoulders. The central function
of architecture is thus to lighten
the very stress of life.”
James Marston Fitch (1909–2000) was an architect and a
Preservationist, one of the founders of the Graduate School
of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at Columbia
University in 1964. (wikipedia)
