The Client

JLL has a rapidly growing Research and Data Science presence within their
organization who ensure that advanced analytics and artificial intelligence are
used for more efficient and data-driven portfolio management.

The Data Science, Application Engineering and Core Technology team,

headquartered in Europe, turned to CARTO to support the development of their Gea
solution.

The Gea solution needed to bring together multiple streams of spatial and
non-spatial data in an intuitive business-user-friendly solution that could be used
by JLL consultants as one of the most relevant digital work tools and as a tool for
customer presentations.

Bringing together millions of data points on industrial, residential, retail,

alternative, NPL and NPA assets - the application needed to be simple to use,
impressive to show to clients and scalable across different territories in JLL.

Challenges

Localization for different markets

With ambitious plans to scale this solution in key JLL “G11” countries, such as the US,
Australia, the UK, Italy and France, JLL needed a platform that could grow and
adapt to the needs of multiple markets. Having already brought significant value
in countries such as Spain and Portugal, it was key to ensure the same quality could
be replicated in other markets - with executive sponsors backing this strategic
solution.

Big Data

The Gea platform brings together thousands of data types on Real Estate assets to
ensure accurate valuations and analyses are provided to their clients.
Connecting to their Big Data Cloud infrastructure (JLL DataHub) would be
fundamental in order to ensure high-quality, automated data pipelines could
support frequent updates to the billions of data points that would be available in the
solution.

User-friendly

Even though JLL has a significant team of Data Scientists and Engineers developing
and maintaining the Gea solution, they needed to ensure the final application
would be intuitive for consultants (with more commercial profiles) to use as
another tool in their day-to-day (alongside Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Sharepoint).
This customer experience would also be critical for clients to see the value of JLL’s
data-driven approach to each project.

Results

Gea has become a fundamental part of JLL’s consulting and commercial strategy.
Soon available in 8 countries, the solution provides three main benefits:

Faster delivery on client mandate

In today’s day and age, Real Estate decisions relating to valuations and
investments must be data-driven, not opinion or intuition driven. Gea has
allowed JLL’s consultants to take their clients on this journey faster.

Extension of consultant knowledge

Typically, a consultant has in-depth knowledge of a specific region, so when a client

enquires about something in a different region their knowledge is more restricted.
With Gea, in a few clicks they can get the market insights they lack to show
directly to the client in the interface.

“Many RE firms are still using PDF reports and Powerpoint. With Gea, we
are moving beyond static information to provide digital solutions and a
superior customer experience. By giving our consultants an
unprecedented amount of information, we can enable our clients to
achieve their goals faster - using data to move away from traditional
intuition-based decision-making.”

Brand positioning as the leading digital RE firm

By providing data-driven solutions as part of the consulting process, JLL can show
how much more digital and innovative their approach to valuations and asset
management is.

Why CARTO?
By using CARTO, JLL has been able to find first-class map-based visualizations and
data pipeline solutions in one single platform - decreasing complexity, saving a
significant amount of time (and therefore human resource) and avoiding
mistakes in the dataops, devops and GISops process.

CARTO’s connectivity to solutions such as Databricks, as well as the platform’s

Python package (CARTOframes) have significantly reduced the strain on JLL’s Data
Science division - allowing them to focus on what matters, high-quality spatial
analysis that brings value to their consultants and their clients.

“CARTO’s Python package has allowed us to make our data pipelines

more efficient, allowing less room for human error - reducing the
amount of time we take to update Gea’s data by 50% or more. The
CARTO support team are rapid to respond and always show us ways to
improve our workflows.”
