Values in work life
Introduction
Quality of life is largely affected by the work by which we earn our livelihood. Our work
shapes our attitudes and personality. We often have conflicts between individual value and value
in work life. These conflicts can be categorized under the following:
1. Attitudes to work:
Through work we use our talent, sharpen our skills and develop our creativity and get
opportunity to learn, grow and improve our knowledge, skills and human relationship.
2. Work ethics and quality of work life:
Organization must have a written, as well as, an unwritten rules/norms and ways of
working. Team working and team spirit are the essential strengths of a successful organization.
Personal honesty and integrity are most important.
3. Organizational values :
Organizations are Social and Human units. Purpose of a business is not just making
profit; the fundamental value lies in the special worth of its products/services and its impact on
quality of life. Man must eat to live but man does not live only to eat. A good organization
should be good to the corporate citizen. EQUITY, JUSTICE and FAIR PLAY are the essential
values in promoting good work culture.
4. Pursuit of Excellence:
Excellence means achievement of exceptional accomplishments or success and getting
excellent result from life as a whole. Chances of failure are always there. Hence, desire for
success is always associated with anxiety
Conclusion:
Value education is particularly important for students in technical courses like diploma
engineering. It is important to understand in the wider social and human context the impact of
their chosen profession on the society at large.
Teaching with technology
Introduction
Teaching with technology can deepen student learning by supporting instructional
objectives. However, it can be challenging to select the “best” tech tools while not losing sight of
your goals for student learning. Once identified, integrating those tools can itself be a challenge.
Need of Technology
The term “technology” refers to advancements in the methods and tools we use to solve
problems or achieve a goal. In the classroom, technology can encompass all kinds of tools from
low-tech pencil, paper, and chalkboard, to the use of presentation software, or high-tech tablets,
online collaboration and conferencing tools, and more.
Recent Technologies
Online collaboration tools - allows students and instructors to share documents online,
edit them in real time and project them on a screen. This gives students a collaborative
platform in which to brainstorm ideas and document their work using text and images.
Presentation software - enable instructors to embed high-resolution photographs,
diagrams, videos and sound files to augment text and verbal lecture content.
Course management tools - allow instructors to organize all the resources students need
for a class (e.g. syllabi, assignments, readings, online quizzes), provide valuable grading
tools, and create spaces for discussion, document sharing, and video and audio
commentary.
Lecture-capture tools - allow instructors to record lectures directly from their computer,
without elaborate or additional classroom equipment. Consider recording your lectures as
you give them and then uploading them for students to re-watch. Studies show that
posting recorded lectures does not diminish attendance and students really appreciate the
opportunity to review lectures at their own pace.
Periyar’s concept of Teacher and Student
A teacher is one who teaches self-respect, a dignified life, strength, equality,
patriotism towards the people and human sympathy. A teacher is the one who never teaches the
epics which are irrational, irrelevant and also brings disgracefulness to the learners.
He is the one who lights the student’s life and makes him/her travel with the help of that
light throughout the life span. A teacher is one who gives ability to revolt and courage to face
the consequences of that revolt. He should increase the ability to fight for one’s nation, language,
and race. He should give the ability to research.
A teacher should be a good human being. A teacher is the one who never teaches
religion and god. Great teachers, instead of converting young men into men of religion, should
try hard to make them men of knowledge.
First of all, students should be obedient to teachers. Next they should learn discipline.
Next only come the lessons at school. Periyar wants the students to consider good knowledge as
education and experience as the teacher. Periyar emphasizes that the student’s duty is to break
all the hurdles like literature, epics god, religions and superstitious rituals that block their
knowledge from being used for development.
