The Sentence

What is called a Sentence ?


When we speak or write we use words. We generally use
this words in groups ; as,

“ Little Jack Horner sat in a corner ’’.


The group of words like this, which makes complete
sense, is called a Sentence.
Kinds Of Sentences

There are four main kinds of sentences in English.

1. Assertive Sentence
2. Interrogative Sentences
3. Imperative Sentences
4. Exclamatory Sentences
Definition

1. A sentence that makes a statement is called an Assertive Sentence.

Example : Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.


2. A sentence that asks a question is called an Interrogative sentence.

Example : Where do you live ?


3. A sentence that expresses a command, an order
or a request is called an Imperative sentence.
Example : Sit over there.
4. A sentence that expresses strong feeling is called an Exclamatory sentence.
Example : How dirty this place is !
Parts Of Speech

Words are divided into different kinds or


classes called Parts Of Speech according to their use ;
that is , according to the work they do in a sentence.
The parts of speech are 8 in numbers.
1. Noun 5. Adverb
2. Pronoun 6. Preposition
3. Adjective 7. Conjunction
4. Verb 8. Interjection
Tense

The word Tense comes from Latin word Tempus. It means


Time or Tense. Tenses are an essential concept and most important to
learn English. Tense is a form of verb to show the time of an action.

Main Tenses
There are 3 main tenses in English.
1. The Present
2. The Past
3. The Future

Sub Tenses
As explained above , each of these three main tenses has
contained 4 sub tenses , that means 03 x 04 = 12 tense are there.
Secret Formula
To construct a sentence in English ,
words are put in a sentence by following order.

S = Subject

V = Verb

O = Object

OW = Other Words

Simple Present Tense

Introduction : The Simple Present Tense is used to express day


to day life actions , repeated actions , habits and universal truths. It
is very common and very important tense in Spoken English.
Day To Day Life Actions

1. They play cricket in the morning everyday.


2. Your father goes to company everyday.
3. I wake up in the morning around 5 o’clock.
4. She comes late daily.
5. The plane flies to London every Monday.
Repeated Actions

1. I always come to class by car.


2. He drinks 10 glasses of water in a day.
3. She always forgets her purse.
4. The train departs every morning at 8 am.
5. He calls me many times a day.
Habits

1. I wake up at dawn everyday.


2. You speak slowly.
3. He drinks wine everyday.
4. Jessica takes a shower twice a day.

Universal Truths

1. The sun sets in the West.


2. Woods float on water.
3. The earth revolves around the sun.
4. Elephants live longer than humans.

Rules

1. In this tense a base form is used ( V1 – To write ).


2. “ To ” is removed when it is used in a sentence ( write ).
3. It is usually conjugated for the third person singular
e.g. He , She , It , by adding “ – s ” , “ – es ” or “ – ies ” to
the end of the verb ( writes ).
Which verbs are added “ – s ” , “ – es ” or “ – ies ” ? to end of the
verbs ?

Verbs end with : ch = catch = catches


sh = wash = washes
ss = cross = crosses
o = go = goes
es is added .
2. Verbs end with : y = removing y = ies is added .
fly = flies
3. For others : s is added .

Articles ( 'आहिकल्स ् ) = उपपदे

The word a , an and the are called Articles. They come before nouns.

1. Indefinite Article : a , an is called the Indefinite Article , because it usually


leaves indefinite the person or thing spoken of ; as , A doctor , that is any doctor.

2. Definite Article : The is called the Definite Article, because it normally points
out some particular person or thing ; as , He saw the doctor ; meaning some
particular doctor.
The choice between a or an is determined by sound.

Before a word beginning with a vowel sound an is used.

A , E , I , O , U are called Vowels .


Example : an apple, an elephant, an inkpot, an orange, an umbrella.

Before a word beginning with a consonant sound a is used.

Remaining 21 letters are called Consonants .
