Parties Political Positions

Political parties seek to capture political power through elections by putting forward candidates for public office. They have different positions along the political spectrum from center to far-left or far-right. In England, the main parties are the center-right Conservative Party led by Boris Johnson, the center-left Labour Party led by Jeremy Corbyn, and the center-left Liberal Democrats led by Jo Swinson. Scotland's largest party is the center-left Scottish National Party which campaigns for Scottish independence and is led by Nicola Sturgeon. Political party – organized group of people or bodies who seek to capture political power

through an election in order to run affairs of a country. It often put forward candidates for
public office. In a democracy leaders must run for office in an election.

Parties political positions – centre, centre-right, centre-left, right or left wing.

ENGLAND

Conservative Party – position centre-right, ideology is conservatism, british unionism,


economic liberalism, conservative seeks to advance opportunity, nurture responsibility
and protect security. It believes that there is such a thing as a society, but its not the same
thing as a state. Conservative stands for free society and a strong nation state, they want
to give people more opportunity and power over their lives. Current leader is Boris
Jonshon, he is a Prime Minister.

Labour Party – position centre-left, ideology is social democracy, democratic socialism.


Labour Party believes that by the strenght of our common effort we achieve more than we
achieve alone. Believes in a society where wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the
many not the few. Stand just for society and open democracy, and a healthy environment.
Current leader is Jeremy Corbyn, he is Leader of Opposition.

Liberal Democrats – position centre-left, ideology is liberalism, social liberalism,


proeuropeanism. Exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which they
seek to balance the fundamental values of Liberty, equality and community. They
acknowledge and respect people’s right to freedom of conscience and their right to
develop their talents to the full. Believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to
attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the
decisions which affect their lives. Current Leader is Jo Swinson

Other Parties – UK Independence Party and Green Party.

SCOTLAND

Scottish National Party – position centre-left, ideology is scottish nationalism, social


democracy, regionalism, proeuropeanism. Continue to campaign for scottish
independence. Make Scotland a world leader in green energy. Invest an additional £1.3
billion in health and social care partnerships and increase numbers of GPs and nurses. By
2021 increase flexible early years education – for all 3 and 4 year olds and our most
vulnerable 2 year olds – from 16 hours a week to 30 hours a week.

Other Parties - Scottish Green Party, Scottish Conservative Party, Scottish Labour Party,
Scottish Liberal Democrats.

WALES

Welsh National Party, Plaid Cymru, Welsh Conservative Party, Welsh Liberal Democrats

NORTHERN IRELAND

Democratic Unionist Party, Sinn Fein, Social Democratic and Labour Party, Ulster Unionist
Party, Alliance Party of Northern Ireland
