Problem Set 1

This document contains instructions for a structures problem set. It includes 4 problems where students are asked to compute reactions, draw shear force, bending moment, and axial force diagrams, and sketch displaced shapes for different structural configurations. The structures have various supports including pins, rollers, and rigid connections. Students are to show the critical values on the internal force diagrams. The problem set is due on January 31, 2001.

CIE 423, Structures III Andrew Whittaker

PROBLEM SET 1

Due: Wednesday, January 31, 2001

For each of the structures shown below, compute the reactions and draw the axial force (N),
shear force (V), and bending moment (M) diagrams. Show the values of the critical points on the
internal force diagrams. Sketch the displaced shape for each problem.

Problem 1: A is a pin and B is a roller.

Problem 2: A and D are rollers; B and C are bolts in oversize holes and can transfer vertical
loads only.

Problem 3: A, E, and F are pins; B is a rigid connection (i.e., can transmit moment).

Problem 4: A and D are pins; the wind loads are force per unit length on the vertical projection of
the members.
