FIRST CONDITIONAL

Use to express a real o very probable situation in the future. It refers to things that will possibly
happen in the future if a condition is met. We are predicting a likely result in the future.

Is common when we are talking about possible plans, promises, warnings, threats (amenaza) or
for persuading someone.

IF CONDITION, + RESULT
IF CLAUSE, + MAIN CLAUSE
Present simple, + Future simple

Example:

- If we work hard, we will finish the project on time.


- If we will work hard, we will finish the project on time. (do NOT use the future tense in the
if-clause)
- If you like Suzy Singer, then you will love her a new album.
- If I see John, I will not tell him about the surprise.
- I will not tell John about the surprise if I see him.
- Where are my keys? If you look in the garage, you will find them.
- If I do not feel well tomorrow, I will not go to work.
- If I go to Italy next week for work, I will visit the Coliseum.
- If I have time tomorrow, I will help you.

RESULT + IF CONDITION
MAIN CLAUSE + IF CLAUSE
Future simple + Present simple

- We will stay home if it rains tomorrow.


- You will feel much better if you take this medicine.
- We will finish the project on time if we work hard.
- You will love Suzy Singer’s album if you like her music.
- I will help you if I have time tomorrow.
ZERO CONDITIONAL

Zero conditional are used for facts that are generally true and do not change. It refers to a general
situation that always happens if a condition is met. The condition always has the same result.

We can often use WHEN instead of IF and it has the same meaning.

IF CONDITION, + RESULT
IF CLAUSE, + MAIN CLAUSE
Present simple, + Present simple

If you leave ice in the sun, it melts. = when you leave ice in the sun, it melts.
If you stand in the rain, you get wet. = When you stand in the rain, you get wet.
If you keep milk in the fridge, it lasts longer = When you keep milk in the fridge, it lasts longer.

RESULT+ IF CONDITION
MAIN CLAUSE + IF CLAUSE
Present simple + Present simple

You get wet if you stand in the rain. = You get wet when you stand in the rain.
