1.Why it is important for the various functional areas of a
business organisation to collaborate?
All the functional areas in an organisation have to work together to achieve efficiency and
cost savings, as an example, I have given the possible functions of the distribution area in an
organisation
Trade-offs are compensatory exchanges between the increase of some logistics costs and
the reduction of other logistics costs and/or an increase in the level of customer service. For
example, the decision to replace non-waterproof packaging with waterproof packaging
increases packaging costs but reduces transportation costs because waterproof packaging
allows the use of open-air transportation mode.
1. Planning vehicle routes to avoid back-tracking. This keeps fuel costs down and
saves time.
2. Ensuring that vehicles do not return empty. This is only possible if goods are both
delivered and collected. Vehicles that only deliver goods normally operate on a
regional or local basis to minimise ‘Empty journey’ time.
Working out the routes for many vehicles, with different loads – some urgent and some not
– can be very complicated. Computer programs are used by staff skilled in logistics to work out the
best routes.
Many organisations outsource both storage and distribution to external contractors. This
means paying a specialist firm to do the work. This is often cheaper than employing experts in the
busines
.
2. What General way does technology have an impact on
operations management decision making?
The scope of Technology and operation management has evolved over a period of time and
has moved from the development of products into the design, management, and
improvement of the operating systems and processes.
Usage of technology in operation management has ensured that organisations are able to
reduce the cost, improve the delivery process, standardise and improve quality, and focus on
customisation, thereby c reating value for customers.
Technology drives efficiency in organisations and increases’ productivity of the organisation.
However, bringing technology in the production system is a highly complex process, and it needs to
follow steps:
Technology Acquisition: technology acquired should align with the overall objectives of the
organisation and should be approved after an elaborate cost-benefit analysis.
Technology Integration: technology affects all aspects of production i.e. capital, labor, and
customer. Therefore, a solid technology integration plan is required.
Technology Verification: once technology integrated, it is important to check whether
technology is delivering operational effectiveness and is been used to its fullest.
