Republic

A republic is a type of government where citizens elect representatives and leaders to govern. The head of government, either a president or prime minister, runs the country on a day-to-day basis. Many modern nations are democratic republics, allowing citizens to vote for their leaders. While republics are generally democratic, they don't have to be - dictatorships can also be republics. In a presidential republic, the president is both head of state and head of government. In a parliamentary republic, the prime minister has the most political power and the president plays a more ceremonial role.
