Revision and Re-vision Reflections
What was the overall effect of the feedback-based revisions you made to your
draft?
Overall, I would conclude the main effect my revisions had on my essay was better coherence
and structure. Beforehand my essay had lacked flow and could confuse someone easily on their first
reading. Because there were many instances in which I strayed from the idea or theme I was trying
to convey in a particular section. I also noticed many times the idea I had when writing was often lost
and mudded in the outpouring of concept I wanted to implement. As I revised, I strove to better
exemplify the subject matter throughout the essay, so the concept remains in the reader’s mind. It is
key the point of my essay remains with the reader long after as I think the topic my essay is concerned
with matters significantly in the real world. So, the effect my revisions have had is undoubtably
positive and has made it overall more comprehensible and intelligible.
What are some characteristics about the feedback that helped you the most? The
least?
The most apparent characteristic among all the feedback I received was, as stated previously,
was that I had an excessive amount of unnecessary information. Which I understood immediately
upon reading the sections they identified when giving their feedback and I instantly knew I needed
to better improve my consistency. It was very apparent that my essay lacked the necessary
characteristics that kept readers engaged. As my essay has very little clarity or organization so the
feedback I received greatly helped and I would have never realized this problem with my essay
otherwise. As for the least helpful quality of my team’s feedback was surprisingly the praise given to
me, as of course, its not particularly helpful in improving my essay. Of course, this is a minor nitpick
and overall, all the feedback I was given was extremely helpful and eye opening.
How was revision based on feedback from peers different from revision based on
self-feedback?
It is extraordinarily different in almost every regard because peer feedback is almost like a
second opinion. Meaning the feedback you are given from your colleagues is not restricted to the
confining nature of your mind. What I mean by that is when you are giving your own feedback to
yourself, it is inherently less helpful. Because, for me at least, you’re blinded by the fact you’ve worked
hard and have put in effort into the essay you immediately believe it to be almost flawless. So, the
feedback you give yourself is minor and less constructive if you were to receive it from a unbait
source such as your peers. Self-feedback can also gloss over a major problem with your essay, such
as with mine, I hadn’t noticed a sizable issue with mine until it was pointed out by my peers. So, peer
feedback comes from a person who does not have the limitations the author may have on their own
work. As a colleague is impartial and can bring to light issues the author may subconsciously ignore
as they are the ones who read and try to understand their reading.
