ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS

1. Using a suitable diagram, list the steps involved in establishing a call to the mobile user by
a landline subscriber. [3]
2. Brief with a suitable diagram how sectoring can be used to achieve capacity improvement?
Compare this with cell splitting technique. [3]
3. In a dense urban area, with path loss component=4.5 and required SIR=13 dB, calculate
the reuse factor and cluster size used for maximum capacity. Assume there are six co-
channel cells in the first tier and all of them are at the same distance from mobile. [3]

4. Prove that in a two-ray ground reflection model,Path difference ≈ t r . Show when this
d
holds as a good approximation. [4]
5. With a suitable illustration brief the handoff scenario for a mobile unit located at the cell
boundary highlighting the improper handoff case. [3]
6. Compute the loss due to knife-edge geometry shown in the figure. Assume f=900 MHz [4]
