WDM Basics for Engineering Students

WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) is a technology that increases the capacity of an optical fiber by allowing multiple signals of different wavelengths to be transmitted through the fiber simultaneously. The key components of a WDM network include optical line terminals, optical add/drop multiplexers, and optical cross connects. WDM uses a multiplexer to combine different wavelength signals and a demultiplexer to separate them out at the receiving end. Bidirectional WDM architectures transmit signals in both directions through a fiber. Important WDM technologies include thin film filters, fused fiber couplers, and arrayed waveguide gratings.

Basics of WDM
 It is Wavelength Division Multiplexing
 WDM is used to increase capacity of single standard fiber
 Here, a number of light sources are used with different wavelength.
 Using Multiplexer, all signals are transmitted by single fiber.
 At receiver side, Demultiplexer separates different wavelength and
gives it to different receiver.
