Lesson Idea Name: All About the Government (Executive Branch)
Content Area: Social Studies
Grade Level(s): 3rd grade
Content Standard Addressed:
SS3CG1 Describe the elements of representative democracy/republic in the United States.
c. State the main responsibility of each branch: executive (enforcing laws), legislative (making laws),
judicial (determining if laws are fair).
Technology Standard Addressed: 2. Digital Citizenship b. engages in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior
when using technology, including social interactions online or when using network devices.
Selected Technology Tool:

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating
Levels of Technology Integration:
☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.
☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☒ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
One of the UDL principles is Engagement. _____ supports the engagement principle, as it isa tool to creare
videos. This also has pictures you can use in your video, and it allows you to use saved videos on your
computer to create your video. Creating a video can draw student’s attention, because children love to be
able to be in control and create things.
Lesson idea implementation:
Students will view my video over the responsibilities of each branch of government. When students are done
viewing my video, students will be instructed to create a video that is a minute long on what they learned
about the responsibilities of each branch of government. Their video should consist of them discussing how
the judicial branch determines the law, the executive branch enforces the laws, and how the legislative
branch makes the laws. This should take students about 20-30 minutes since students will have just learned

about the above standard. I will assess students by participation and seeing if they discussed the roles of each
branch correctly. To further extended the lesson, students could go more into depth about each branch of
government. For example, who makes up the executive, legislative, and judicial branch.
Importance of technology:
Using the multimedia is a good form to get the students engaged in the lesson. Instead of having students sit
and write on paper or do a worksheet, they get to create a video which most will think is so fun! This lesson
could be done without using technology, but the students would not get much out of it or will not be as
engaged.
Inspiration (optional)
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
I think a possible issue that could happen is that if a student don’t use a website they were told to, they could
end up on a non-educational website which could lead them getting wrong information. Also, if students were
to use google images, they may find inappropriate images that are not related to the content they are
learning. Another thing is these video applications allow you to record your voice in the video, this would be a
case of breaking student privacy rules/laws. Having the students write their full names and all types of
personal information they post could be dangerous as well. As a teacher, we should be aware of the websites
the students are using. To be safe, have parents fill out a form that allows students to access the recording
button on the video application, to cover everyone.
Reflective Practice:
I really feel like this lesson allows for my students to think outside of the box and see how they would like to
create a movie, as well as see what information is important to them. Students will later see everyone else’s
videos and see what others put to engage in class discussion and generate more ideas off of their peers. To
have further extended the lesson, students could go more into depth about each branch of government. For
example, who makes up the executive, legislative, and judicial branch.
