1.1 The aim and purpose of this manual

Why you should read this manual

Read this manual before you put the excitation system into operation, because
• you will find important advice on operation and safety
• you will learn precise technical details and correct operation of the excitation system
• you will find out what you can do to ensure smooth operation and a long service life of the
system

1.2 Using this manual

Persons for whom the manual is intended
This manual is primarily aimed at the operating and maintenance personnel for the UN 5000
excitation system. The intended persons should possess adequate knowledge of electrical
engineering and have relevant experience.
They should have taken part in the ABB training program for excitation systems. We
recommend that maintenance personnel attend periodic training courses.

Scope of the manual

The manual contains all the information's required for safe and correct operation of the UN
5000 excitation system. Section 2 contains important information on the safety regulations
for the operation and maintenance of the excitation system.
The manual contains 11 sections and is included in the scope of delivery of the system.
Section 11 contains additional documents, independent of one another, such as data sheets,
maintenance regulations and technical descriptions of specific components.
Together, they form a compilation of all the information, which is required for correct
installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance, including troubleshooting.
The document is intended for use by trained operating personnel, who must possess the
usual basic knowledge of electrical engineering.
The initial commissioning and localisation of faults requires special technical knowledge in
combination with the special system hardware schematics and the test and commissioning
report.
The voltage regulator equipment has been tested according to defined test standards.
The values set on the basis of function tests which have been carried out, selected
parameters and software programming can be seen from the test and commissioning report.
The data contained in this must always be updated in accordance with any changes, which
are made.
In the event of problems, this manual can be used to help localise faults.
A defective unit, whether a module or a power component, should be replaced with a spare
unit. Detailed localisation of faults within the system can only be carried out by specialists.

In order to ensure that the valid information regarding system status is always readily
available and accessible, it is important that the aforementioned documentation modules are
always kept complete and up-to-date, and that the manual is kept in a safe place.

Advice
Important advice is always presented at the start of a section, paragraph, sub-paragraph or
line.
The advice is divided into different categories and is emphasised through the use of graphic
symbols.

Symbols

Danger Indicates a possible source of danger, which can lead to

serious personal injury and/or material damage.

which can occur during the use of technical equipment or installations. We therefore
request that you consult us, or our responsible agent, in the event of all such occurrences
for witch the presented document doesn't contains specific information.
In addition to this manual, the applicable local safety regulations should always be
complied with when both connecting and commissioning equipment or installations.
Any work, which needs to be carried out inside equipment, for example soldering or
removing jumpers or resistors, may only be carried out by qualified personnel.
We expressly refuse to accept any responsibility for any damage caused by improper
operation of our equipment or installations, even if no specific reference to this is made in
this manual. In particular, we point out that only original replacement parts may be used.
