During these uncertain times, the need for theatre has become even more prevalent than before.
And keeping our current circumstance in perspective, I want to commend the cast and crew for
going forward and carrying out this production. I believe that this production was very successful
in utilizing video-conferencing and editing technologies to produce this play. And having used
these modern technologies, it was apparent that the director and crew explored this digital space
to reimagine the production and distribution of a play in contrast to the pre-pandemic, traditional
theatre methods. At several points, however, I found myself getting pulled out from the story due
to the sub-par audio quality of the production. Though a minor issue, at certain points I would
not be able to hear the dialogues or have a character’s voice pop. Yet at the same time I found
myself staying engaged with the story due to the smart use of these digital media texts. One
instance that I particularly enjoyed was the use of screen splitting to show two characters on the
phone with one another; or when the similar technique was used to show the scene where the
characters were placed on a fictional TV screen with another character interacting with it.
Apart from this, I believe the staging of this play really benefited the storytelling. A particular
scene that stood out to me was when the Justice characters were first introduced at the supreme
court; this staging of the actor’s “zoom” recordings aided the illusion that the actors were located
at one place. Furthermore, I really enjoyed how this technique was used for secondary
characters. As in one instance where the actor who played a maid would appear on the top and
bottom corners of the screen and interact with the four other characters by serving them “tea,”
and who would be interacting with one another. Personally, I found this to be a very smart and
creative approach to the staging of this play on two dimensional space.
Other than these drastic technicalities, I found myself very engaged by the content of this
production. At first, I was a bit confused by the set-up of the play but this I believe is because the
play takes its bases on a legal case “ Roe v. Wade (1973),” a landmark case that legalized
abortion in U.S.A. and the fierce debate that followed. Though I was quick to catch on to the
story once Norma and the lawyers were introduced. As an outsider to this play, I understand this
play takes place on actual events that have taken place and keeping this in mind, I found it very
interesting how the play was able to convey the events of history in a way that a global audience
might be able to understand the story. With this, I really enjoyed how each of the actors were
able to really embody the character as it brought passion to the play; Particularly I really enjoyed
the character arc of Norma. Her sudden changes in beliefs and the developments towards it, were
definitely shocking, dramatic and at times hilarious but ultimately brought soul to the play. At
certain points I would find myself distracted or zoning out as some scenes in my belief were a bit
stretched out and that the play explored many discourses regarding the subject of reproductive
justice, leaving the play to be very long. However, the playwright was able to pull back my
attention as I believed the play was able to slide in enough wit and character developments that
would be poignant, dramatic or critical to the story and would make the story engaging again.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed the general narrative and the adaption of this play. Specifically I
really enjoyed how this production was able to explore and transform a three-dimensional,
physical medium into a two-dimensional and digital medium. Other than that, I commend the
actors who were able to memorize and embody the characters so well given the time they were
given for rehearsal. I truly enjoyed their performance and the way this production was packaged
in terms of its production and distribution.
Abdullah,
