RARS, Hathazari

A. Establishment : In 1956 as SM Farm,


Later on as RARS in 1976
B Location : 22 km north east from Chittagong
1 km west from Hathazari Upazilla H/Q
C Total area : 62.75 ha
(a) Plain area- 50.89 ha
(b) Hilly area-11.86 ha
D Topography : High land to medium high land, flood free
E Temperature : The maximum temperature range 25-370c and the
minimum temperature range 10-210c
F Rainfall : The annual average rain fall 2590 mm

G Soil texture & P : Clay loam to sand loam , PH 5.5-6.5
H Agro-ecological Zone : 23 (Chittagong Coastal Plain) & 29 ( Eastern Hills)

Challenges of agriculture in Chittagong region

i. High rainfall during monsoon


ii. Severe drought during Summer
iii. Cyclone, tidal flood & tornado
iv. Salinity in the coastal area
v. High Post harvest loss of fruits and vegetables
vi. High incidence of pest and disease
vii. Inadequate quality seed and sapling of improved fruit varieties

Future Research Thrust

1. Hybrid variety development of maize from local source (inbred)


2. Development of grafting technique of wood apple, Indian dillenia and other minor
indigenous fruit
3. Integrated fertilizer management for higher yield of banana

5. Off-season production potentiality of hyacinth bean in chittagong region
6. Potentials of summer pumpkin in chittagong region
7. Survey on watermelon diseases and the management approach
8. Survey and identification of nursery and field diseases of citrus fruits and the
management approach
9. Irrigation and fertigation techniques for higher yield and quality of fruit crops
chittagong region
10. Identifying best agricultural practices, cropping pattern and innovation and their
socioeconomic impact on food and livelihood security of farm household in
chittagong region

Facilities needed
Land Development: Two (02) hectare area with sixty cm height for extending vegetable
breeder seed production block
1. Laboratory space: Establishment of tissue culture laboratory for rapid clonal
multiplication, Post harvest technology laboratory.
2. Laboratory equipment: Micro balance, refrigerator, Air Conditioner, Micro wave oven,
Growth Chamber, Salinity meter, Soil moisture meter, Distilled water plant, portable EC
meter, Leaf Area meter, Digital seed counter, Auto meteorological station, Digital
balance, digital brix meter, Portable pH meter, Multimedia projector etc.
3. Laboratory chemicals : Nutrient –agar medium, growth hormone,
4. Infrastructures: Implement shed – 1000 sq. m, Threshing Floor – 5000 sq.m.
5. Farm equipments: Tractor with harrow, Power tiller.
6. ICT (Full requirements)- Band width up-gradation ,
7. Renovation of Pathology lab, Horticulture lab, Cold storage etc.
