Sars Cov-2 RT PCR Test Name Observed Values Units Biological Reference Intervals ORF 1ab N Gene: Interpretation

The test results for Mrs. P.NAGA LAKSHMI, a 62-year-old female, were negative for SARS CoV-2. The nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs were tested for ORF 1ab and N genes associated with COVID-19, and both were not detected, indicating a negative result. A negative result does not rule out infection, as inhibitors, mutations, or insufficient viral RNA could influence the test. The report provides additional context on testing limitations and clinical significance.

Notes:
A negative result does not rule out the possibility of covid -19 infection. Presence of inhibitors, mutations and insufficient RNA
specific to SARS-CoV-2 can influence the test result. Kindly correlate the results with clinical findings.
1. A negative result in a single upper respiratory sample does not rule out SARS-CoV-2 infection. Hence in such cases a repeat
sample after a gap of 2-4 days after the collection of first specimen for additional testing should be sent. Lower respiratory
samples like sputum, BAL, ET aspirate are more appropriate samples especially in the more severe and progressive lung
disease.
2. A detected test result does not differentiate between a viable / replicating and non-viable organism.
3. Sensitivity of this test depends upon the quality of sample submitted for testing and stage of infection.
4. Covid- 19 testing done using ICMR/ US-FDA/ CE-IVD approved kits.
Clinical Significance:
Corona viruses are a large group of viruses that causes illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases like Middle East Respiratory
Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV). Corona virus (COVID-19 ) is a new strain that was discovered in
2019 and has been not previously identified in humans. Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever and cough, shortness of
breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome and kidney failure.
