                                 PERINEAL – GENITAL CARE
DEFINITION: Perineal care is bathing the genitalia and surrounding area. Proper assessment
and care of the perineal area will need professional clinical judgment.
PURPOSES:
      Cleanse the skin and mucous membrane of the perineum
      Provide comfort to the patient
      Remove excessive secretions/discharges
      Discourage the growth of bacteria, thereby, lessening susceptibility to infection
      Remove normal perineal secretions and odors
      Prevent infection (e.g. when an indwelling catheter is in place)
      Make the patient feel comfortable
Indications
       1.   Routine part of the morning care
       2.   Each time the patient voids/defecates
       3.   Before the specimen collection especially clean-catch urine
       4.   Postpartum patients
       5.   Bedridden patients
       6.   Patients with retention catheter
       7.   Post -operative patients
Contraindications
       1. Patients contracted with sexually transmitted diseases
       2. Patients whose secretions are needed for laboratory work-up
Things to Remember
       1. Wash hands thoroughly before procedure.
       2. Drape the patient accordingly. Provide privacy.
       3. When the perineal cleaning is carried out in a dignified manner, remember the
          following:
          a. In male patients, handle the penis with a gloved hand or with a towel to prevent
               erection (tactile stimulation) that may occur during the cleaning procedure.
          b. Avoid direct contact by facing the foot of the bed.
          c. Avoid eye contact with the patient to avoid embarrassment.
          d. Avoid nasty comments/jokes.
       4. Be sure that the patient is dry after the procedure. Wash hands.

1. Assess client’s condition of the skin and
    the extent of soiling of the perineal
    area.
2. Identify the patient’s capabilities.
3. Wash hands.
4. Prepare all the equipment.
5. Identify the patient.
6. Explain the procedure to the patient.
7. Provide privacy.
8. Place patient in dorsal recumbent
    position.
9. Place a rubber sheet under the patient
    buttocks and place client in the
    bedpan.
10. Expose perineal and drape.
11. Put on a clean gloves and proceed as
    follows:
For female patient:
    a. Flush the perineal area with warm
        water.
   b.   Clean the vulva from the anterior
        portion towards the anus then
        discard cotton balls.
   c.   Gently separate the labia with
        gloves finger and clean between
        the labia majora and labia minora.
   d.   With labia separated, clean the
        clitoris urethral meatus and vaginal
        orifice.
   e.   The thigh is cleansed using a stroke
        away from the perineum.
   f.   Rinse and pat dry.
