Class 3: Basketball Course
Title/Focus Education
PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES
GLO A: Students will acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement
activities; dance, games, types of gymnastics, individual activities and activities in an alternative
environment; e.g., aquatics and outdoor pursuits. (Basic skills- locomotor, manipulative)
SLO:

o A5–6 consistently and confidently perform manipulative skills by using elements of body

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Perform a variety of locomotor skills with accuracy and confidence
2. Demonstrate how to pass in control and with accuracy with a basketball
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
Basketballs
Whistle
PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Get basketballs out
Ensure hoops are down
Clear the gym of hazardous items
PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
Warm up- Girls line up on one baseline, boys on the other (girls do each first,
followed by the boys)
o Run to half and back and then baseline and back
o Slide to half and back and then baseline and back

o Carioca (crisscross – one foot in front one foot behind as turned
sideways) to baseline and back
This is the normal warm up routine so students will already have an idea of what
is expected of them
Body Time
Review 1) Review of shooting form 3 min
2) Ask students what they remember
3) Go through steps
a. Feet should be shoulder width apart, with your
dominant foot slightly forward, knees slightly
bent
b. Hips need to be slightly hinged
c. Ball should be in palm of hand (facing up) in
front of your head with dominant hand

d. Other hand is supporting, but not holding the
ball on the side
e. Elbow should be lined up with the ball, not bent
out like a chicken wing
f. Bent elbow facing forward and tucking the ball
g. As you are shooting the ball, you are extending
all the way from your toes, to knees, to hips, to
elbow and be straight at the top, with your
whole body being extending straight up and on
your tippy toes
h. Wrist should flick at the end like you are
reaching into a cookie jar, aiming where you
want to shoot the ball
i. As you are shooting, you are looking at the
target, specifically the back of the rim
j. Ball should have back spin on the shot
Passing intro 1) Introduce that passing is one of the most important
skills in basketball since it is a team sport. Passes
needs to have accuracy and power
2) Different types of passing:
a. Chest pass 5 min
b. Right/left handed pass
c. Bounce pass
i. One handed
ii. Both hands
Partner passing 1) Students will grab a partner and will line up across 8 min
from each other (entire class down two lines)
2) One partner grab a ball
3) We will practice each type of pass and techniques
4) Demonstrate each
5) Chest pass:
a. Two hands on the ball
b. Hold ball at your chest with elbows out and
hands on each side
c. As you pass, extend arms fully and flick wrists,
aiming where you want the ball to go
d. One step forward for more power
e. Step into the pass and to the target
6) Right/left handed pass
a. This pass is like a shot, but it comes from the
side of your body, rather than above the head
b. Other hand should be a support hand
c. Tuck the ball at your side
d. Step with the opposite foot
e. Foot and hand should end up facing target
7) Bounce pass (chest)
a. Like a chest pass, except with a bounce
b. Bounce should be ¾ of the way between you
and your partner

c. Should have enough force to bounce into your
partners hand
d. Step into the pass
8) Bounce pass (right/left hand)
a. Step with opposite foot, like you are stepping
around a defender
b. Bounce should be more one handed than two
handed, other hand is just for support
c. ¾ of the way bounce
Lakers and 1) Everyone needs a ball and a new partner
Warriors 2) Stand across from each other
3) When I call Lakers, one side will chest pass and the
other will bounce pass
4) When I call Warriors, vice versa
5) They should not be bouncing the ball after they catch a
pass
6) Practice this a few times before competition

7) Competition:
a. If you lose a pass, you and your partner sit
down
b. If you bounce when you are supposed to chest
pass, you sit down
8) Take time in between calls for students to gather
themselves
9) Last team standing wins
