The History of the QWERTY Keyboard

The QWERTY keyboard layout gets its name from the first six letters on the top left letter row of the keyboard. It was invented in the 1860s by Christopher Sholes to prevent early typewriter keys from jamming together, by placing commonly used letter pairs farther apart. While other keyboard layouts have been proposed to be more efficient, QWERTY remains the standard keyboard configuration due to its historical ubiquity and familiarity.
