Prepositions:

A preposition is a word that indicates the relationship between a noun and the other words of a
sentence. They explain relationships of sequence, space, and logic between the object of the
sentence and the rest of the sentence. They help us understand order, time connections, and
positions.

#There are a few interesting linguistic facts about prepositions.

1. No new preposition can be added, prepositions are fixed in English linguistic.


2. Prepositions do not have any other forms.
3. Sometimes a preposition works as nouns, adjectives, and adverbs.
4. Prepositions with two or more words are called phrasal prepositions.

#Types of Prepositions:

Most of the prepositions have many uses. There are some prepositions which are common in
every type of preposition as they function in a versatile way.

#Prepositions of time:

Prepositions of time show the relationship of time between the nouns to the other parts of a
sentence. At, in, on, since, for, till/until, by, from, to, before, after, ago etc. are the most common
prepositions of time.

1. At -
Position: before partial time of the day
Sample: at dawn, at night, at midnight, at midday
Example: I suddenly woke up at midnight.

Position: before hour


Sample: at 6 (o'clock), at 7 p.m., at 18 hours (24 hours clock)
Example: I was studying at 7 pm.

Position: points in time


Sample: at the time, at the same time, at the end
Example: I was walking and running at the same time.

2. In -
Position: before weeks, months, years, seasons
Sample: in July, in 1996, in the summer
Example: I went to Austria in 2015.

Position: points of time in the future


Sample: in a minute, in 30 seconds
Example: I will reach there in a minute or two.

Position: parts of the day


Sample: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening
Example: She was dreaming in the morning.

3. On -
Position: Days
Sample: on Sunday, on the Eid day
Example: I may meet you on Sunday.

Position: Dates
Sample: on the 25th, on December 25
Example: My birthday is on the 28th of December.

4. Since -
Position: from a point of time in the past and still continuing now (starting time)
Sample: since morning, since 6 pm
Example: I have been roaming around since morning.

5. For -
Position: duration
Sample: for two hours, for 5 minutes
Example: She had been waiting for an hour.

6. Till/Untill -
Position: up to a point in time (End time)
Sample: until 5 am, until Sunday
Example: I was working on my project until midnight.

7. By -
Position: before, at the latest
Sample: by Thursday
Example: Give it back by Sunday.

8. From -
Position: starting
Sample: from today
Example: I am starting it from tomorrow.

#Phrasal Prepositions:

A phrasal preposition is not a prepositional phrase, but they are a combination of two or more
words which functions as a preposition. Along with, apart from, because of, by means of,
according to, in front of, contrary to, in spite of, on account of, in reference to, in addition to, in
regard to, instead of, on top of, out of, with regard to, etc. are the most common phrasal
prepositions.

Example:

They along with their children went to Atlanta.

According to the new rules, you are not right.

In spite of being a good player, he was not selected.

I’m going out of the city.
