ON EDGE: She was on edge = ella estaba tensa, irritable


BY HEART: He knows that by heart: se lo sabe de memoria
ON HAND: I don’t have a screwdriver on hand: no tengo un destornillador a mano
ON THE WHOLE: en general. I have some problems at work but on the whole I have a good
job.
BY THE WAY: por cierto
AT SHORT NOTICE: a corto plazo
AT BEST: en el mejor de los casos
OFF THE RECORD: confidencialmente (it’s a secret)
OUT OF ORDER = It doesn’t work: no funciona

TO GET INTO HOT WATER: meterse en líos. He robbed a bank and got into hot water with the
police.
TO PULL SOMEBODY’S LEG: tomar el pelo a alguien. I don’t believe you, you’re pulling my
leg.
