CONCLUSION

It can be concluded that Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) gives a lot

of benefits to citizen in Malaysia. After the opening of SMART tunnel in 2007, seven

potentially disastrous flash floods have been prevented from happening to nearby city. Other

than that, it save a lot of government’s billion dollars in possible of flood damage and traffic

congestion. From this incident, we can see that SMART tunnel had the best achievement as it

also been listed as one of the world’s greatest tunnels by CNN in preventing a lot of accident

that could happen anytime at there as well as the longest and most technologically advanced

tunnel in Malaysia. Besides, SMART tunnel gives benefits to motorist who travel far places

that would need a shortcut road as they can reduce their time between Jalan Istana

interchange and Kampuang Pandan. The storage reservoir and twin box culvert to divert any

floodwater also helps the tunnel to work more efficiently when it is on mode three where the

flood gates are tightly closed at both ends of tunnel. All of the design in SMART tunnel also

have meaning that contributes safeness in dual purpose of structure.

A big gratitude to the constructor of this SMART tunnel which are Gamuda Berhad and

MMC corporation Berhad to incept in this project where they wanted to mitigate the

recurring floods in the city of Kuala Lumpur, the financial and the commercial hub in

Malaysia. With the corporation with department of irrigation and drainage Malaysia, SMART

tunnel was a success project as only takes about 4 years to finish it.

From this project, there are many things we learned, not just the tunnel but including the

concept we learn in civil management subject, where we know all the roles part of people

who participate in this project. More than that, we were able to understand on how the

stormwater management works that contributes the traffic from congestion. We also get to
know more detail about the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) from Germany that has been used

in constructing the where it used to bore underground without affecting existing structure.

Last but not least, SMART tunnel gives a big impact in develop our country to become

better in future. SMART tunnel is the only one way that can solve flooding flood issues in

this area as it gives a lot of quality to people who used it especially to motorist. More than

that, it can save our country from any disastrous of flash floods that can happened anytime.
