I would firstly like to praise God for giving me the strength and ability for the
completion of this School Based Assessment. I would also like to thank all my
friends, family and all the people in my community who were the foundation for
this School Based Assessment. Not forgetting my Social Studies teacher, I would
like to thank her for guiding me throughout this School Based Assessment.

Introduction
Since being a resident of Strathavon, Cane Grove for the past fourteen years, there
were always rumors about one’s religion. This School Based Assessment is being
conducted for the purpose of elaborating on whether people think that being a part
of a religion is a cohesive or diving force among them.

Statement of the problem
To investigate the different ethnic groups, their religion and what they think about
religion being a cohesive or diving force.

Reason for Selecting Area for Research
The area ‘Strathavon’ was selected by the researcher to carry out this School
Based Assessment because of the following reasons:-
1. The researcher resides in the area so distribution and collection of
questionnaires will be easy.
2. The title chosen by the researcher relates to issues arising in the village.

Method of Investigation
For the collection of data from the community, the researcher have decided to use
questionnaire
Some advantages of using the questionnaire are:
I. It ensures the confidentially of the responder.
II. It can be completed at the convenience of the responder’s home or office.
III. It is easier to understand and easier to answer the given questions.

This survey is being carried out in Strathavon, Cane Grove for
the purpose of elaborating on the question ‘Is religion a cohesive or diving force?’
This study is being conducted because it is compulsory for the Social Studies
School Based Assessment I am currently doing.
You are asked with all respect to answer all questions truthfully. Your responses
will be treated confidentially. Most of the answers can be answered by a ‘tick’ () in
a box (). Requirements are given where you will have to write.

Figure 1 above is representing the different ethnic groups that are residing in the
community. There are (7) East Indians, (2) Portuguese, (1) Chinese, (4) Africans,
(3) Amerindians, (5) Europeans and (8) Mixed Descent.

Figure 2 is showing the different religions in the community. There are (13)
Christians, (10) Hindus, (5) Muslims and there are (2) other religions.

The above the figure is showing people’s opinion about religion being a cohesive
or dividing force. (20) Persons think religion is cohesive, (7) thinks it’s a dividing
force and (3) persons do not know.

Interpretation of Data
Thirty questionnaires were given to thirty individuals in which all thirty were
returned back.
Of thirty respondents, in figure (1) the pie chart is representing the numbers of
individuals who are East Indians, Portuguese, Chinese, Africans, Amerindians,
Europeans and Mixed Descent. During the survey there were seven (7)
respondents whom were East Indians, two (2) whom were Portuguese, one (1)
whom was a Chinese, four (4) whom were Africans, three (3) whom were
Amerindians, five (5) whom were Europeans and eight (8) respondents whom were
Mixed Descent.
Of thirty respondents, in figure two (2) the bar graph is representing the
religions in which the respondents have chosen. Thirteen (13) respondents
indicated that they are Christians while ten (10) indicated that they were Hindus
and there were five (5) respondents whom indicated that they were Muslims. There
were two (2) other respondents whom indicated that they were from another
religion named….
In figure three (3), the pyramid graph is showing a measure of how much of the
respondents think that being in a religion is a cohesive or dividing force. Twenty
(20) respondents think that being in a religion can be cohesive whereas seven (7)
thinks it’s a dividing force. Then there are three (3) respondents that are not sure
whether it is a dividing force or a cohesive.

Findings
The findings of the study are as follow:-
I. In the community there are all the ethnic groups present. Majority of them
are Mixed Descent followed by East Indians and so on.
II. In the community named Strathavon, most of the people are Christians
followed by the Hindus and so forth.
III. The rumors about religion being a cohesive or dividing force are being
sorted out. The researcher have found that religious persons in the
community ,e.g. Pastor, Pandit, etc. have being saying that being a part of a
religion is a cohesive force while other non-religious persons in the
community are saying that it is a diving force and also a waste of time.

Recommendations
I. All the people in the community should come together whether religious or
non-religious and help in promoting for cohesion among both non-religious
and religious persons and also persons of different religions.
II. The non-religious persons in the community should be penalized for
gossiping one’s religion.
