GE-AA (ART APPRECIATION)
1st Semester, A.Y. 2020 – 2021

PHILOSOPHY

SDSSU believes that higher education is an instrument for the improvement of life through democratized access to quality education in
the development of a well-rounded person.

VISION

A leading “glocal” University with widened academic perspectives that focus on attaining food security, supporting poverty alleviation,
developing renewable energy, and conserving natural environment.

MISSION

SDSSU shall provide competency-based higher education training driven by relevant and responsive instruction, research, extension
and sustainable resource management.

Particularly, SDSSU is committed to:

1. Produce competent and skilled graduates prepared for gainful employment;


2. Develop graduates who shall not only foster economic progress but also care for the environment, adhere to positive value system, and preserve cultural
heritage;
3. Engage in high-impact research for instruction and develop technology for food security and renewable energy;
4. Collaborate with government and non-government agencies to help improve the lives of the marginalized groups; and
5. Promote cooperation/partnership among regional, national, and ASEAN institutions in Higher Education.

PROGRAM GOALS

This program produces graduates that are not only adept in English language, its linguistic features but also proficient in conventional and analytic discourse,
exposition and research. The program is designed to meet the following objectives:

1. Provide students with the opportunity to develop and enhance their four macro-skills;
2. Enrich students’ understanding on literature and English language, as well as its linguistic principles and theories;
3. Develop a systematic, critical and analytical mindset of students in research and other technical undertakings; and,
4. Instill the value of commitment, industry, integrity, and professionalism.

INSTITUTIONAL INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

As an academic base of the university, the College of Arts and Sciences is committed to:

1. Contribute to the progress of Caraga Region by producing specialists and high level professionals fortified with adequate knowledge and proficiency in the
respective fields in social sciences, humanities, mathematics, natural and applied sciences; governance, leadership and infused with sense of moral leadership,
love of country appreciation of culture diversity and sustainable use of natural resources.
2. Adhere to acceptable standards in the conduct of teaching/instruction, thriving scholarly research, community extension and outreach programs, and production
activities with the end view of producing workforce in fast changing “glocal” work setting.
3. Functions as a social laboratory that nurtures critical awareness of current/contemporary issues in both local, regional and ASEAN perspective, promote the
sustainable use of natural resources for inclusive growth and effective linkage with partner agencies with the end view of quality instruction, research, publication
and production.

Course Description : Art Appreciation

Art Appreciation is about nature, function, and appreciation of the arts in contemporary society. (CMO 20 s 2013)

Art Appreciation is a three-unit course that develops students' ability to appreciate, analyze, and critique works of art. Through
interdisciplinary and multimodal approaches this course equips students with a broad knowledge of the practical, historical, philosophical, and
social relevance of the arts in order to hone students' ability to articulate their understanding of the arts. The course also develops students'
competency in researching and curating art as well as conceptualizing, mounting, and evaluating art productions. The course aims to develop
students' genuine appreciation for Philippine arts by providing them opportunities to explore the diversity and richness and their rootedness in
Filipino culture.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

Knowledge
1. Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of arts in general, including their function, value, and historical significance
2. Define and demonstrate the elements and principles of design
3. Explain and evaluate different theories of art
4. Situate Philippine arts in a global context

Skills
1. Analyze and appraise works of art based on aesthetic value, historical context, tradition, and social relevance
2. Mount an art exhibit (concept, development, production and postproduction, marketing, documentation, critiquing)
3. Create their own works of art and curate their own production or exhibit
4. Utilize art for self-expression and for promoting advocacies

Values
1. Deepen their sensitivity to self, community, and society
2. Discover and deepen their identity through art with respect to their nationality, culture, and religion
3. Develop an appreciation of the local arts
